OFFICE FENG SHUI TIPS

8 WAYS TO BOOST BUSINESS LUCK

The Year of the Water Rabbit promises to be a busy year for businesses. As the world continues its rebound from the pandemic, the feng shui luck forecasts predict new opportunities, new challenges, and for some, new competition. While there are many ways to help your business thrive, you can start by implementing these 8 office feng shui practices.

1. KEEP OFFICE CLUTTER TO A MINIMUM

It is worth putting in the effort to keep the main entrance, doorways, and walkways of your office free of clutter always. Not only does clutter block the flow of chi and allow stagnant energy to accumulate, research has shown that it acts as a constant visual reminder of work that is waiting to be done. This increases mental load on the brain, and indirectly affects everyone’s stress levels. By ensuring minimal clutter, you and your staff will naturally be able to focus and perform better, resulting in enhanced productivity all round. First impressions count for a lot, so if you also use your office to meet with clients, an office free of clutter and filled with good vibes could help you seal the deal.

2. PLAN OUT SEATING POSITIONS

Another way to improve productivity is to ensure your staff are seated facing their auspicious directions when at their desks. This will improve their performance and make them happier doing their work. Those in senior, managerial or sales roles should face their Sheng Chi direction so they make the right decisions, lead their teams effectively and help bring the business to greater heights.

Use our Kua Number Calculator to determine their best directions.

In 2023, the East plays host to the Tai Sui, while the West has the Three Killings. As one should never confront the Tai Sui or have one’s back towards the Three Killings, remember that EVEN if East is an auspicious direction for you, you MUST NOT FACE EAST in 2023. Pick one of your other lucky directions instead. This will make a big difference in avoiding unnecessary obstacles.

3. CHOOSE THE RIGHT LIGHTS

In feng shui, lights are a powerful source of fire energy, but it can also affect our mood and the way we work. For offices, stick to lights that have a cool blue or white tone. Warmer yellow lights can be too relaxing, creating lethargy and laziness. Don’t skimp on lights either. While you don’t want the lighting to be harsh, they must be of adequate brightness to create a conducive environment for everyone to work. Flickering lights and those that have blown are not just incredibly distracting but are also inauspicious, so do replace them immediately.

4. BRING GREENERY INDOORS

Lucky Bamboo

Plants are wonderful in the workplace as they introduce vibrant yang energy into an otherwise cold and sterile space. They are fabulous enhancers of the Wood element, the element which has life and brings growth energies. Best to place your plants in the East and Southeast, which are Wood element sectors.

Certain plants are considered more auspicious than others. Succulent “money plants” with round full leaves are great for attracting wealth and money luck. Lucky bamboo and plum blossoms are also wonderful choices, as they are believed to symbolize tenacity, good fortune and prosperity.

But plants with thorns and spikes send out countless poison arrows that dampen our chi, so avoid these at all costs. It is important to display only plants that are healthy. Look after them well, and remove dropping leaves or broken branches as soon as they appear, for your office space to continuously enjoy good chi.

5. INSTALL A WATER FEATURE

Water features support the Water element and are frequently used to unlock flow of income, wealth and prosperity. The best kinds are those that have tiers, with water trickling down in layers. Be mindful of size. Water features should never overwhelm a space. as too much water can signify “drowning”. Installing a water feature in the North enhances career luck. Because the North also plays host to the #1 Victory Star in 2023, having a water feature here will attract new opportunities and boost competitive luck as well. The addition of a water feature to the SE, meanwhile, activates for wealth and income.

6. REMEDY THE #3 QUARRELSOME STAR

Achieving business success will be an uphill battle if your business is plagued by the hostile chi of the Quarrelsome Star. This year, this star flies to the SE, directly affecting businesses whose main doors face SE. To prevent lawsuits, to maintain harmonious relationships amongst staff and to prevent conflicts from getting out of hand, display the Red Prosperity Elephant with Anti Conflict Amulet here. You can also decorate the entryway with a red carpet or hang auspicious art with red accents to quell its vicious Wood chi further.

7. ACTIVATE THE #4 STAR

Amplify growth potential by harnessing the cosmic energies of the #4 Relationship Star. This star fosters teamwork and brings good ideas to the fore, while boosting networking luck. It helps facilitate connections with stakeholders so that things can get executed more smoothly. As the dominant star of the year, its energies are considerably potent. Tap into them by placing the Cardinal of Connectivity Activator in the Center of the office.

8. CEMENT YOUR POSITION

For business owners, CEOs, top management: As leader of your business, the feng shui of your room within the office is of utmost importance. Check the Flying Stars against your office layout to determine the kind of energies you contend with, then counter any afflictive energies with strong cures and activate the auspicious ones with enhancers. Display a Rooster to counter office politics and a crystal sphere to absorb negative chi.

Position your desk diagonally opposite the door so that you are not constantly being disturbed by the flow of chi. Best to have a solid wall behind you for strong support and face your personal Sheng Chi direction. An artwork of rolling golden mountains on the wall behind where you sit, and the Lunar Mansions Harmonizing Plaque on your desk will strengthen your position further.

About two years ago, a friend of mine confided in me about her work situation. She told me that she was sick of working at her consulting firm and was about to begin her search for a new job. I was puzzled at this, as Jane was doing so well the last time I caught up with her. She had already been with the company for eight years and was well on her way to running her own division! She was the bosses’ favourite and there was even talk of promoting her to take on a regional role in Vietnam!

I asked her what had happened and Jane began pouring her heart out about all the problems she had at work. All her headaches seemed to manifest about six months ago after “the big move”. According to Jane, her department had performed so well that she and her team were upgraded into a newer and larger wing in the building. Everyone in Jane’s department got brand new cubicles and the bonus was the large window that overlooked the city’s skyline. Jane, being her boss’ pet, was given the largest cubicle right next to the window. She was thrilled to bits – but ironically, this was the beginning of everything working against her!

After moving into her new office desk, Jane’s performance and her strong position at work began to suffer. She got infected with a rare flu virus and was forced to stay away from work for more than two weeks. Being sick and away caused Jane to miss a very important deadline for her largest client. It was truly a very serious matter, as her client was involved with a bid for a high-profile government project, which they lost due to her being away. It was so serious that her client threatened to withdraw all their projects with the firm, and lodged a formal complaint against her, insisting that she be replaced!

News of this got to the Executive committee and Jane was asked to attend a formal ‘verbal’ warning meeting. Suddenly, she found herself under performance management overnight. Each day she was required to meet with her boss to report on all her tasks and deadlines. Her boss began checking her every move and scrutinizing all her delivery times. All this caused a great amount of stress for Jane and she fell ill again. Being away from work for another two weeks caused her boss to lose even more confidence in her. The final blow came when all her large accounts were removed from her and given to another colleague. Jane was reassigned all the smaller accounts and asked to work with a junior executive.

Up to this point, Jane was never a serious practitioner of feng shui, but she knew instinctively that somehow the change of office space had affected her success in some way. As Jane was a very old friend mine, I offered to take a look at the feng shui of her office. Reluctantly, she said to me “take a look if you want – but I’m going to find a new job soon, so I’m not sure if fixing my feng shui is worth the effort!” she sulked.

That weekend, we visited Jane’s office on the 28th floor. It was a lovely cubicle set on the West side of the building, so it meant that Jane was able to watch the sun set every evening. It was also very hot as there were no blinds to block away the evening sun.

I proceeded to take directions of the main door she used to enter this part of the office wing. Bad news! The door was facing her Chueh Ming direction! When I reached her cubicle and took directions there, my compass showed the same thing. Jane was also facing her Chueh Ming at her office desk!

The Chueh Ming is the total loss direction. It brings every kind of bad luck and can cause serious reversals of fortune. It is no wonder she was falling sick and having such serious obstacles at work!

And finally, the one big thing causing her to lose the support of her bosses and clients was the position of her desk. Jane was seated with her back towards the large window, which overlooks the ground 28 floors below!

I explained all this to Jane and she just folded her arms in defiance. “What am I supposed to do about this? I can’t change my seat and there is no way I can turn my desk around,” she said. So here is what I recommended:

1 First, I advised her to use a different entry into the 28th floor. The good news was that there were two entrance doors into her floor – one led to the West wing and the other led to the East Wing. I advised her to use the other entrance into the East Wing. It meant that Jane would have to walk a little further to reach her cubicle, but the change was worth the effort. This was the perfect entrance for her as it was facing her Sheng Chi direction, which was significantly more beneficial for her.

2 Next, we had to kill off her Chueh Ming star. The Chueh Ming has a weakness – it is vulnerable to fire energy. Fire energy weakens the Chueh Ming and when it is accompanied by a spiritual cure, it becomes almost powerless to inflict harm. I advised Jane to place a table lamp directly in front of her and keep it turned on. By having this fire energy in front of her, whatever Chueh Ming energy there was coming towards her would be nullified. I also advised Jane to wear our Red Fire Totem pendant – a stack of powerful seed syllables that create the element of fire. Wearing the Red Fire Totem Pendant not only counters the effects of the Chueh Ming, but also protects Jane from physical and emotional harm. It will help to minimize her vulnerability to illness as well.

3 Thirdly, I advised her to hang a painting of a mountain behind her. Even though there was a window behind her, this was not difficult to achieve. I explained that all she needed to do was to order an A1 sized print of a mountain and paste it behind her using blue tack. She was very reluctant to lose her “view” of the sunset, but she caved in after I insisted.

4 Finally, I advised her to place plenty of auspicious symbols on her desk to increase her luck and good fortune. Specifically, I asked Jane to place a set of the Eight Auspicious Objects, a RuYi to reclaim her authority, the Windhorse to increase her success luck and the  Jade Emperor holding a windchime to bring powerful benefactors for her.

Reluctantly but surely, Jane implemented all my suggestions.

In the same week, things started to improve for Jane. Now that she was entering her floor using the East Wing door, it had the benefit of passing by all the offices of the Executive Directors. Each day, Jane would drop by and have a little chat with a different Executive director on her way to her cubicle. This allowed her to showcase her incredible talent for problem solving and her reputation as a “bringer of practical solutions” began to spread among the Executive team!

After three weeks of chatting up the Executive Directors, Jane was invited to facilitate and lead a “secret” brainstorming project at work. Not even her boss was invited to participate so it was a real honour to be asked! She performed the role so well that one of the Executive Directors asked for her to be transferred into his department!

Fast forward a year later, Jane is now running her own division under the Executive director who had her transferred into his area. She was given a hefty raise, a new company car and even the use of the company driver! All this unfolded for Jane as soon as she implemented these simple but effective feng shui strategies! I’m so thrilled for Jane, as not only did feng shui save her from making the mistake of leaving such a great job, it made her realize how important feng shui directions can be!

Chinese New Year is round the corner and we are busy spring-cleaning and working through our list of feng shui updates, checking directions, moving furniture around and making sure all our new cures and enhancers are in their rightful locations. It is something we look forward to every year, as it is a wonderful opportunity to redecorate and prepare for the arrival of fresh new energies.

One of the areas we pay special attention to every year is our workspace, i.e. our desk.

It is an important extension of our careers and aspirations, so we like to keep this area in harmony with the changing chi. Since the pandemic started, we now have quite a few workspaces set up. We are sure many of you are the same!

Take the time to ensure all your designated desks enjoy good feng shui next year. Whether at home or in the office, here are some useful steps to getting your desk prepped and ready for a smooth and auspicious working year ahead.

1) CHECK YOUR DESK LOCATION

Compass sectors that are lucky in one year can become unlucky in the next, depending on which Flying Stars take up residence. Seeing as we spend a big bulk of our working hours at our desks, it only makes sense to locate it in a sector blessed with uplifting and inspiring energies.

The best sectors to place your desk in 2022 are the Northeast, North and Northwest. Check the compass directions of your big and small tai chi spaces to see if you need to make any changes.

If your desk is already in a good sector, make sure to activate it with appropriate enhancers. Display a Rooster to counter office politics and a crystal sphere to absorb any negative chi.

However, should your current location turn unlucky in 2022, best if you can move your desk to a more auspicious sector, failing which, strong cures should be employed to subdue any afflictive energies and to keep you safe from harm.

Remember to also take note of these important feng shui rules when determining your desk’s new location:

  • Place your desk diagonally opposite the room door so you are not being constantly disturbed by the flow of chi.
  • Make sure you have a good view of the door at all times, as having your back to the door encourages acts of betrayal and backstabbing.
  • Try not to sit facing a blank wall. This signifies big obstacles in your career and can hinder your advancement. If there is no other choice, hang artwork depicting wide open fields to open you up to new opportunities again.
  • Pick a location where you can sit with a solid wall behind you to attract strong support luck. Strengthen further with an artwork of rolling golden mountains.

2) CHECK YOUR SITTING POSITION

As a general rule, you should always face your Sheng Chi direction if you want to tap career and business luck. The exceptions are when it clashes with the Tai Sui or it has you with your back towards the annual Three Killings. When your Sheng Chi is afflicted like this, pick one of your other lucky directions instead.

In 2022, the Tai Sui settles in the Northeast, while the Three Killings flies to the North. Hence you MUST NOT sit with your desk facing NORTHEAST or SOUTH next year. This is understandably much easier to do at home than in the office, which is why we have created the remedies to help you counter these afflictions.

If you have no choice but to face Northeast, it is vital you keep the Tai Sui firmly on your side all through the year. Pay homage to the Tai Sui by displaying the Tai Sui 2022 Plaque on your desk and carrying the Tai Sui Amulet at all times. You can further appease him by wearing Pi Yao jewelry.

If facing South is your only option, you must make sure the vicious energies of the Three Killings do not reach you. Stay protected by displaying the Three Killings Protection Shield on your desk and keeping the 3 Celestials Protection Shield Amulet close.

3) ENERGISE YOUR DESK WITH FRESH CHI

When your desk is a source of joy, you will be more likely to stay focused and productive. Once you have your desk location and sitting position sorted out, don’t forget to refresh the chi around it.Start by giving it a good spring clean and declutter session. Clutter takes up precious space and subconsciously causes the mind a lot of stress. If you have allowed things to get out of hand, now is a good time to put things away, throw out unwanted junk and replace what does not function anymore.

A desk that is clean and clear helps you stay focused and productive for longer, which is why keeping the clutter at bay on a permanent basis is just as important. Make use of desktop organisers and drawer units to store things away neatly, at least till you find the time to sort them out again.

Finally, spruce it up! Create an inviting and zen workspace for yourself with things that make you feel good. A small, healthy plant, aromatherapy or even new stationery.

Step into 2022 on the right footing by starting work on these auspicious dates:

BEST DAY TO START WORK

1ST DAY OF CHINESE NEW YEAR | TUESDAY
1ST FEBRUARY 2022 | CONFLICT RABBIT

3RD DAY OF CHINESE NEW YEAR | THURSDAY

Are you feeling blah about your life? Does boredom make you unmotivated and unexcited? Are you having a mid-life crisis? Give your personal motivation a boost to overcome this kind of inertia. Here are 7 easy ways to help you set new goals and to get your career back on a course that excites and motivates you.

1. IMPROVE YOUR YOUR PERSONAL WORK SPACE

If you want to enjoy good feng shui at work, try to select your work space carefully.

Guidelines:

  • Always try to have your office and desk in the far corner diagonal to the entrance door into the whole office. The deeper you are inside the office, the better the feng shui.
  • Never have your office or desk located at the end of a straight corridor or walkway.
  • Do not sit in an office or at a desk that directly faces a toilet door or staircase. Your chances for advancement will be severely curtailed.
  • Do not sit in an office or at a desk that places you directly underneath an exposed overhead beam. You will suffer from endless pressure and headaches.
  • Do not sit with your back to the door, whether it is the door into your private office or the door into the main office itself.
  • Never sit at a desk which subjects you to the cutting edge of a protruding corner. Move out of the line of fire or use a leafy plant to block it.

2. TAKE NOTE OF SEATING ARRANGEMENTS AT WORK

When you are involved in business meetings, always make sure you do not sit with a pointed edge of a table facing you. If you do this, you will have a poison arrow aimed at your stomach and will be placed at a disadvantage compared to the rest of your colleagues. Always sit facing your best direction while you are working.

3. ENERGIZING YOUR COMPASS GROUP

West Group Energizer

  • Energize the West with a model aeroplane laden with coins tied with red thread. Bells and windchimes are also effective.
  • Energize the Northwest in the same way. Do not put bright lights in either the West or Northwest as these will magnify all your problems.
  • Energize the Southwest with lots of natural crystals. If your main office door is also located in the Southwest, then placing a large crystal here is most effective. A large amethyst crystal boulder with a deep ‘pocket’ to capture all the good fortune coming into office is ideal for attracting good business luck.
  • Energize the Northeast in the same way as the Southwest, but it is not necessary to display crystals that are too large here.

East Group Energizers

  • Energize the East corner with plants, flowers and paintings that feature lush vegetation and water. Avoid anything metallic in this corner. Windchimes, scissors and blades cause a lot of harm here.
  • Do the same for the Southeast corner, except here you can also display a miniature fountain or a simple bowl of water.
  • In the North, place a broad-based bowl of water with a terrapin inside. This can be real or fake. The real one is to be preferred.
  • In the South, place something red – a painting, red carpet, red cushions – and a bright light to energize the luck of a great reputation. Properly energized, the South brings excellent reputation luck.

4. CREATING SUPPORT WITH A MOUNTAIN

  • In the office, never sit with your back to the door. Doing so invites deception and betrayal. You should always sit with your back supported.
  • Sit with a painting of a mountain behind you but make sure it is big enough to be meaningful. Do not have mountain ranges that are too sharp since these Fire element mountains are less useful. The best type of mountain for protection is a mountain that resembles the back of a turtle.

5. POSITION YOUR TELEPHONE FOR LUCK

  • If you want to feng shui the telephone and fax machine in your office, you must first observe from what direction the energy that brings the messages through the phone line is coming. This is considered the source of the telephone’s energy.
  • The next thing to do is to position the phone so that the source of messages, calls and so forth is coming from your most auspicious direction – your sheng chi direction.
  • Do not make the mistake of thinking it is the wall plug we are talking about. It is where the connection lead itself is plugged into the phone that matters.

6. PLACE A LUCKY CRIMSON BIRD IN THE SOUTH

  • The South is the Crimson Phoenix which symbolizes fame and recognition. The Phoenix also brings the luck of opportunities. When you energize this king of all feathered creatures, you are also activating the beneficial energies of the South. The luck of this particular sector suggests a great brightness, because the South is also the place of the element of Fire. Thus a crimson feathered creature to symbolize the phoenix is extremely auspicious. It will activate your social life and you will become well-liked and popular amongst your colleagues and work associates.

7. ENERGIZING YOUR DESK TOP FOR CAREER SUCCESS

Flowers

  • Place a vase of fresh flowers on the East side of your desk. Flowers create yang energy. But do not allow flowers to overwhelm you or block your view. And always change the flowers as soon as they start to show signs of wilting.

Plants

  • Place a healthy small plant in the Southeast corner of your desk. This attracts good income luck and enhances your chances of personal growth.

Crystals

  • Place a smooth crystal ball in the Southwest corner of your desk to create the luck of harmonious relationships with all your colleagues.

Lamps

  • Any kind of light energizes your good name and reputation when placed in the South. This is one of the most excellent methods of creating a solid reputation within your company, and within your business community.

Calculators and Computers

  • All personal office equipment made of metal should be placed on a separate table that is preferably located to the West or Northwest of your desk. If you need to have them on your desktop, place them to the right of you, but make certain you also have something higher to place on the left side. This ensures that the energies of the Dragon will prevail over the Tiger.

Updated March 2023

In Feng Shui, mountains play an important role in shaping the chi energies that affect our lives and particularly in influencing the quality of our RELATIONSHIP LUCK. If your relationships need improving – for example, relationships with your husband and children at home, or at work, with your colleagues and your superiors, then invite the image of the mountain into your home and office. The placement of the mountain is important, and different kinds of mountains bring different kinds of luck. This is determined by observing the mountain’s shape, element, colour, undulation pattern and number of peaks. Lillian Too has designed her range of Mountain Paintings that take all these attributes into account, making it very easy for you to harness the benefits of displaying a Mountain in your home.

To Counter the #3 Monthly and Annual Star

In 2023 the Southeast is under attack by the Number 3 Flying Star which saps and destroys its energy and brings quarrels and arguments to the household. Thus Lillian Too has designed this special fire-earth mountain with Three Mountain Peaks to subdue the Number 3 star.

Another benefit of having Three Peaks goes back to lineage fengshui; they reveal that anyone who can see the Three Peaks of a Mountain from their home will raise sons who will become top ranking officials of the land. Hence this mountain painting also brings special luck to help children of the family grow up into honourable high ranking positions.

Gaining Support from Colleagues and Bosses

Those climbing the career ladder will know how valuable it is to have the right kind of support in the workplace. If you are having trouble with colleagues, or difficulty getting your bosses to notice your ideas and support your decisions, then what you need is a solid image of the Mountain behind you. When you have a mountain behind you, it creates the energy of the Celestial Turtle that shields you from politicking and brings special mentors into your life. But not just any mountain will do; it is vital to select a suitable Mountain image depending on the direction you are facing on your work desk.

For example, mountains behind you MUST NOT have the image of water as this represents a “hole” behind you, bringing problems rather than the support you need. Mountains must always be placed behind, not in front of you. Lillian has designed these four Support Mountains images specially for this purpose, and have added real gold onto each painting; so that each mountain brings you support as well as GOLD (prosperity).

Sometimes, all you need to do to turn your luck around is to make very minor adjustments to your feng shui. In this month’s case study, we share with you a great story about our student from Singapore who completely turned his business around just by making simple configuration changes to his office layout in order to benefit from his best directions.

James* owns a recruitment firm in Singapore, which he started four years ago. Things had gone so well that James needed to expand his firm and take on four extra consultants to service his growing client base. The problem was that he had outgrown the existing office premise and it was simply too small to house his newly-hired consultants. Coincidently, a larger suite in the same office building became available; so James rented the space and moved everyone into the building.

This was when things started to go awry for his firm. As soon as they moved into the building, his most senior consultant – a man named Mark – decided to leave his firm for a competitor. In leaving the firm, he also took along with him one of James’ biggest clients! Having lost his biggest account, some of his staff was left with no work and they began competing with each other for client work. At various moments, things got very heated between two of his staff, and some of them threatened to leave and join the same firm that had poached Mark away from his firm.

Within three months, James had to face the prospect of closing down his previously thriving business! He was saddled with rental for larger office space, a very unhappy set of staff, and not enough work to keep his business afloat. His cash flow dwindled very quickly, and James was now very worried he might have to remortgage his apartment to pay for his overheads!

Meanwhile, James had already signed up to attend Lillian’s MPC course a year ago – based on a recommendation from one of his friends. With things being so stressful, he decided that he needed a break, and there was nothing to lose by attending the Course, since it had already been paid for.

At Lillian’s course, James discovered why his luck had changed so dramatically after moving into his new office space. Here are two of the main problems he had with his new office plan:

1. His Main Entrance Was Facing His Total Loss Direction

At the course, James learnt how to calculate his Kua number and discovered that he was a West Group person with Kua number 2. The problem was that his main entrance into his office suite was facing NORTH – his Chueh Ming direction! The Chueh Ming is also known as the direction of total loss and it is considered the very worst direction. According to classical texts, the Chueh Ming brings very serious misfortune and can even be fatal when it coincides with a year when a person is hit by bad flying stars! On this particular year, the Five Yellow had also entered his zodiac palace. And by using this Chueh Ming as the entrance to his business, James lost his biggest client, which was causing him serious financial stress.

2. His Office Desk was facing his 6 KILLINGS Direction

To make things worse, James’ office desk was orientated to face SOUTH, which was his Six Killings direction. Also known as the Lui Shar, facing this direction caused James to suffer difficulties arising from problems managing his staff. His most senior consultant not only left him, but was making moves to poach his other senior staff!

James waited till the last day of the Course to consult me about his case. He was feeling so depressed as he simply could not see how he could tap his good directions. “There is simply no way I can change my entrance and I wish I had known about my Kua Number before taking this office space!” he said despondently. But there is a way, I assured him; all that was required was for him to sacrifice a little bit of office space to make it work!

Here is the solution to his problem and the changes we recommended:

New Main Entrance to face NE

Only a minor adjustment was made to his layout so that James could tap the Northeast direction, which was his Sheng Chi Direction. The Sheng Chi is the best direction for success and business growth. We advised him to hang a painting of a waterfall feature directly facing his entrance to bring good business luck for him.

Install a BIG Signboard with Bright Lights

The other thing we advised him to do was to hang a large signboard of his company name outside his office and shine bright lights onto it. This would make his business more prominent and restore the confidence of his clients.

Re-orientate Office Desk

Finally, we advised him to re-orientate his desk to face his Sheng Chi direction. To do this correctly, he also needed to build a solid wall behind him. We advised him to hang a painting of a large mountain (with no water) behind him as this would help him secure the support of his staff, his bankers and his clients.

James did exactly as recommended, and his business recovered tremendously! A year later, he returned to take the MCC class with Lillian, and he shared this wonderful story with the class!

James explained that after changing his entrance and re-orientating his desk position, things really improved and business took a big turn upwards! James was able to secure two new large accounts, which actually saved his company. His big client eventually came back to him because Mark was not able to deliver the same level of quality service in his rival’s firm! That year became his best business year as James’ firm was also given industry recognition for being the “Most Innovative Recruitment Firm” of the year!

We are so thrilled that it worked out so well for James. In our experience, we have found time and again, that students and clients who listen carefully to our advice and follow our recommendations exactly as prescribed really benefit from a turn-around of whatever predicament they are experiencing.

“I can’t believe that all I did was change my entrance door; it made such a big difference!” said James when he came back to see us. “Thank you for this amazing advice… I owe you guys big time!”

career tipsJust like how a Feng Shui practitioner creates harmony with the surroundings while removing obstacles, we should also apply the same principles to our jobs and for when we would like to upgrade our careers. In Asia, it has become common practice for staff to seek new environments and experiences as well as new jobs right after the Chinese New Year. This symbolically means starting a new life, a new career alongside the New Year. And you see many people making prayers at the temples during the 15 days of the Lunar New Year in the hope of having a better year. If you want a better year career-wise in 2017, you should start by removing obstacles to your success both in your home as well as on your work desk.

CHECK YOUR HOME FOR OBSTACLES THAT MAY IMPEDE YOUR SUCCESS POTENTIAL

  • Take a look at the North corner of your home. Look out for clutter, or damaged walls and furniture. For example, if the North corner is where you store old newspapers or unwanted items, this can lead to stagnation in your job. If the walls there are stained or damaged, this could lead to more serious afflictions in your career. Broken or damaged furniture or light fittings in this corner should always be repaired or replaced. If you have your toilet in the North corner, you should keep the toilet door closed when not in use, and always keep the seat down in the WC. In addition, you can hang a facetted crystal ball or natural piece of quartz crystal in the toilet to help reduce its ill effects on your career luck. If this is your kitchen, display a crystal here to create harmony.
  • Next, you should look at the main entrance to your home. Here we are looking for poison arrows, sharp angles or pointed edges of other buildings that hit at your main door. If you find any, hang a facetted crystal ball on the door trimming to help diffuse the “shar chi” directed at your home. You can also use a mini chandelier to the same effect. Of course, any clutter here or damaged doors will also lead to problems with incoming luck to your home.
  • Check your bedroom, and make sure you sleep with your head pointed to one of your four auspicious directions. You should lie on your bed and look around your room for potential poison arrows from overhead beams or sharp corners of columns. Keep your room clutter-free, as a cluttered room is a sign of a cluttered mind, which leads to poorer performance at work. You can also place a small figurine of a tortoise under your bed in such a way that the head of the tortoise faces your feet. This helps to promote a good rest the night before going to work so you are always well rested and ready to take on a new day.
  • You can also activate career luck by means of a water feature in the North corner of your living room, or by placing a brass image of General Kuan Kung reading a book in the Northwest corner.
If you want success and upward mobility in your job, it is important to keep your workdesk clutter-free.

CHECK YOUR OFFICE FOR OBSTACLES OR ANY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

  • You should keep your work desk clutter-free. This not only is good feng shui practice, it also gives your superiors the impression you are someone that is well organized and efficient.
  • If possible, always sit facing one of your good directions based on your Kua number.
  • If an upward career is what you seek, place a set of your allies and secret friend figurines on your work desk, as by doing so, you invite helpful people into your life.
  • You can also hang 9 tortoises strung with string on the back of your chair and cover it with a jacket if you like. The 9 tortoises carry the meaning of steadily climbing up the career path. Alternatively, you can display the 3 Sheep opening up the mountain behind where you sit at work.
  • Display photos of success moments such as when you received an award from the company for being top achiever of the year and so on.

LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB?

If looking for a new job is what you seek, there are a number of effective rituals that you can use to help you achieve your goal.

WISH FULFILLING BIRDS FOR FINDING YOUR DREAM JOB

Write your wish on a small piece of red paper (2” x 2”) using a black pen. Keep your wish clear and detailed. A good example would be “I wish to find a job in XYZ company as the xxxx manager and be paid a salary of RM xxxxxx”. Roll up the paper with your wish on the inside and then put it inside the wishfulfilling bird. Place the bird near a window, your balcony or your main entrance. Make sure the bird faces inwards (bringing good news) and then just sit back and let the bird do its magic.

5 BATS OF SUCCESS

According to a Chinese legend, there are silver-coloured bats that live for a thousand years in the high mountains feeding on stalactites, and if you were to have the good fortune to run into one of them, you would have the luck to live a long healthy life. Bats drawn in red are considered very auspicious symbols of success, prosperity, happiness, authority and longevity. As such, five bats are drawn in red and decorated on jars, vases and also used in the decoration of the home. When displayed near the entrance of the home, this age-old symbol of success brings you the added luck of achieving your wishes.

WISHFULFILLING JEWEL RITUAL

To do this ritual, you need to obtain a translucent jewel of any colour. As you have to hold the jewel with both hands, the jewel should not be too small or too large. A good size would be around 3” – 4” in diameter. Jewels that have auspicious mantras or seed syllables engraved on them are more effective. You need to find a quiet and private place in your home, and holding the jewel in the cup of your hands, close your eyes and visualize in your mind your wish coming true. For example, if your wish is to get promoted, visualize yourself holding onto a letter that says that you have been promoted to that position. You can even create a mock-up letter to help you to visualize better. Keep that image clearly in your mind, and then chant the following mantra. It is best if you can do this practice every day. In fact, the more often you do this practice, the quicker the results will manifest.

CREATE A HARBOUR OF SHIPS BRINGING YOU MANY NEW OPPORTUNITIES OF INCREASED INCOME

Since ancient times, merchants from all over the world believed in the good luck symbols of fully-laden merchant ships bringing wealth and opportunities from all over the globe. As such, in many prosperous Chinese homes, you will find sailing ships being displayed fully laden with ingots, coins, as well as other symbols of wealth.

In the modern world today, merchant ships have not lost their meaning; in fact, we see its meanings strengthened, especially when you have tanker ships carrying black gold or crude oil.

You can also create a mini harbour of ships in your home by display up to eight sailing ships decorated and fully loaded with ingots, coins, semi-precious stones or other symbols of wealth. Just make sure your ships are not pointed towards your doors, as doing so means that your wealth sails out of your home. Ensure that all the ships are sailing in from one of your four auspicious directions based on your Kua number, so that the wealth that comes into your life brings you happiness.

FENG SHUI YOUR RESUME AND ACE THE INTERVIEW

You can also apply the basic principles of feng shui when writing your resume. Start by selecting the right kind of photograph, and by this it means you should make all efforts in grooming yourself before taking the photo. Prior to having your photo taken, you should have performed the wishfulfilling jewel ritual and recall that same wish you made during the time your photo is taken. Make sure the photo is a flattering one of you with a pleasant expression on your face.

You should also use a balanced, broad-based and official looking font when writing your resume, such as Arial, Calibri, Courier, Garamond, or Times New Roman. You should avoid Italics, or unbalanced fonts such as Agency, Comic Sans or other narrow fonts.

Next, you should de-clutter your resume. Remove any information, qualification, experiences that are not pertinent to the job you are applying for. In fact, it is good to have some open spaces in your resume. Make sure the information contained is properly structured and easy to read. You should also add a touch of red in the resume to add some vital yang energy. And finally, sign off your resume using your auspicious signature. (An auspicious signature is one that moves from the left to the right in a smooth manner. The last stroke on your signature must always be upwards or at least higher than your first stroke.)

Always use a balanced, broad-based and official-looking font when writing your resume, such as Arial, Calibri, Courier, Garamond, or Times New Roman. Avoid Italics or unbalanced fonts such as Agency, Comic Sans or other fonts that are overly narrow.

On the day of your interview, after preparing yourself, look at the mirror and say some positive affirmations such as “Today I will pass the interview with……… and they will realize that I am the best candidate for the job.” Take a last look at yourself before leaving home to make sure that you are properly groomed and you have on properly matching clothes. It will also be auspicious if you wear something that is red in colour, and remember to carry some lucky amulets with you. When you arrive at the place of the interview, discretely pull out a compass to determine which your auspicious directions are, so that you are able to face one of your four auspicious directions during the interview.

People who work spend most of their waking hours at the office, so it is imperative to have a harmonious work environment. Functioning in a properly feng shui-ed office makes a world of difference to productivity and interpersonal relationships. It makes you enjoy coming to work. Harmony at the workplace diffuses bitchiness, reduces politicking and minimizes gossip – things that can cause much unhappiness. Good feng shui in your personal space helps you achieve recognition and promotion.

Given these benefits, can anyone afford NOT to ensure their workspace has been properly feng shui-ed?

1. Watch Your Back

Anyone who wants to harm you will find it easier to stealthily creep up on you when you are not watching and hit you from behind. So it makes sense when feng shui repeatedly warns you to watch your back. Make sure you have good back support where you sit.

If you are in a desk job, ensure the back of your chair is placed so there is a solid wall behind you. Sitting with your back to the door is incredible bad news. But a window directly behind you can also be bad. Close such windows with heavy blinds and display support symbols of career success behind you.

These are the dragon tortoise , the turtle, or a painting of a mountain. Get one that does not have water painted into the scenery.

2. Avoid Sitting Facing A Wall

A desk that is placed facing a wall acts as a barrier to promotion. If you cannot move your desk, hang a picture of scenery featuring an open field to symbolize your own personal “bright hall”. Or hang on image of a phoenix on the wall in front of you to symbolize being faced with many opportunities. This will help counter the negative effects of facing a wall, and will create the cause for you to change desk to one with better feng shui.

3. Display A Rooster

The rooster is the best symbol to use to counter office politics. If you are constantly dodging underhanded tactics from co-workers, display a rooster with a prominent beak and comb to peck away at unwanted politicking. Another good symbol to use is the jade cicada, best worn as a bracelet.

4. Display A Crystal Sphere To Absorb Negative Chi

Nothing ensures harmony and more efficiently than crystal spheres. Place six in various sizes in the space you have consciously defined as your own. This will ensure your hours spent at work are pleasant and rewarding. Crystal spheres have great, active power in this period of 8.

5. Avoid Being In A Confrontational Setting Arrangement

Position your work desk so you are not directly facing anyone else. It is better to have your back to someone than to be positioned facing another person directly, because facing someone constantly will cause confrontational energies to build up between you and that person. Even if you work for someone and cannot change the layout of the entire office, try to ensure that at least your own desk is positioned to avoid this.

6. Choose The Right Chair

The chair you sit in at work will have a bearing on how well you do in your career. Because you have to sit in it for long periods at a time, especially in a desk job, get a chair that is ergonomically designed to prevent back and neck strain. Herman Miller chairs are wonderful office chairs because they are specially designed to minimize aches and strains, allowing you to sit at length without getting tired or uncomfortable. Chairs meant for visitors on the other hand do not need to be overly comfy, lest they overstay their welcome! When picking sofa sets and settees for meeting areas, go with something not too comfy, for the same reasons. Harder sofa sets also generate a more dynamic type of chi energy more suited to the workplace.

7. Do Not Sit Too Near To The Door

Sitting too near the door, especially the front door in an open plan offi ce, is an unprotected and vulnerable location to occupy. If the office lay-out is such that someone has to be nearer the door than others, and that someone happens to be you, try to sit such that you avoid having your back to the door. Make sure you can see the door at all times, so you have a view of people approaching. Make doubly sure you have the necessary support symbols with you to counter the negative effects of such a desk location. At the next opportunity to move desk, do so!

8. Tidy Up The Clutter

A cluttered desk is the surest way to dull your efficiency. Make it a point each morning to spend just 10 minutes clearing your workspace. Do not let newspapers, books and stationery mess up your space. People who say they prefer an “organized mess” have not enjoyed the joys of a tidy desk and will marvel at how efficient they can become if they work in a less cluttered manner.

9. Beware Of Hidden Storage

While you tidy up your desk, it is easy to simply shove unwanted documents and papers untidily into drawers and cabinets where they cannot be seen. Although this improves the outward appearance of your desk, over time, this can build up into stagnant energy that harms your success at work unseen. Do not neglect your drawers and filing cabinets. Make it a point to every now and then go through and organize your drawers. Throw away what you don’t need.

10. Avoid Sharp Edges

Make sure you don’t have sharp edges that point directly towards where you sit. Sharp edges are poison arrows that send harmful shar chi or killing breath towards you. The killing energy sent your way will not just hamper your career success; it could also cause you to fall ill, get cheated or get blamed for everything.

11. Work With Good Lighting

A well-designed office is one where lighting is well-designed. Natural lighting is best, so have as many windows as possible. However, half windows are better than full-length windows for areas where work desks are located. Full-length windows bring in too much yang energy, making it difficult to concentrate and creates a feeling of vulnerability. Basement offices with few or no windows are seldom auspicious. To supplement natural light, best is to use full spectrum lighting, which simulates natural daylight bringing better visibility, health and efficiency. Another way to characterize light is white versus yellow light. White light is better for offices, because the overly cosy ambience created by yellow light slows down productivity.

12. Sit Facing Your Sheng Chi

The best direction to ensure career and business success is to tap your Sheng Chi by sitting facing that direction. Find your sheng chi from your Kua number using the Eight Mansions formula. If you cannot tap your Sheng Chi, try and sit facing one of your other three auspicious directions. It is definitely a MUST to carry a handy compass at all times so when you attend meetings away from the comfort zone of your desk, you can make it a point to sit facing a good direction. This will give you an edge when you interact with people. Make this a life long habit.

How To Calculate Your Kua Number

KUA NUMBER SHENG CHI DIRECTION
1 Southeast
2 Northeast
3 South
4 North
5 male Northeast
5 female Southwest
6 West
7 Northwest
8 Southwest

For Male

Take the last two digits of your year of birth and add them together. Keep adding till you get a single number. Deduct this from 10 if you were born before 2000, and from 9 for those born in the year 2000 or later. This gives your Kua number.

For Female

Take the last two digits of your year of birth and add them together. Keep adding till you get a single number. Add 5 to this number if you were born before 2000, add 6 for those born in the year 2000 or later. If the result is a two-digit number, keep adding till get a single number. This is your Kua number.
