I recently had the opportunity to create a perfect Period 8 house. It happened quite by chance when the property next door to where I have lived for the past 35 years came on the market. Impulsively I bought the house, because I realized it had great potential. The land area was large – almost 9000 sq ft and it was elevated and thus had a good view…
These days it is no longer easy to find yummy pieces of good residential land near the city and in my part of town too! I love where we live – it is probably one of the nicer suburbs of this great city of Kuala Lumpur, which is itself one of the most fabulous cities in the world. Many of my students who come from every corner of the world and who had never visited Malaysia before cannot believe how beautiful, safe and modern our city is – and the bonus is that our people are so warm and keen to make friends with foreigners.
We are indeed a very hospitable country and mine is one of the nicest little corners of my beautiful country! My “village” can be considered to be part of the great BANGSAR neighbourhood, which in the recent twenty or so years has become very trendy indeed, being near enough to the city center yet incredibly self contained in terms of having everything you need to live the great life, all “just down the road”, including not one but three very well-managed shopping malls.
These fully air-conditioned social centers come complete with swanky supermarkets, upscale movie houses, live show theatres, designer boutique shops, small town businesses and bank branches and hundreds of restaurants. There are hospitals, country clubs, schools and everything else you need to make life very comfortable indeed. Bangsar roads are wide, traffic here is manageable, views are terrific and the terrain is hilly and undulating, definitely signifying the presence of Earth Dragons! So the area has auspicious foundations!
Bangsar is thus famous and extremely popular with the expatriate community. Fewer people know about Bukit Pantai, the high-end corner of this suburb. Within Bukit Pantai is a small and secluded valley where less than a hundred families live. This is where I live, and it is here where prime residential land can still be found. These come in the form of old houses begging to be torn down and rebuilt, and right now there are several houses being renovated and revitalized – like what I have been doing with my own house.
Changing these older lots into period 8 abodes is the key to giving it the feng shui oomph necessary to get the chi flowing auspiciously again. Many of the houses here sit on choice pieces of bungalow land in a neighbourhood; this is ground that sits along tree-lined roads that are wide and with mature infrastructure facilities. Happily, the roads here have only just been “upgraded” with a new layer of tar, giving the enclave here a fresh new feeling.
There are not many of such finds left as the city expands further outwards.
These days, to find yummy pieces of land on which to build one’s dream house and also have it NEAR to the city is difficult. It is not about money any more, it is about availability. So when old properties next door to me come on the market, I am interested. Number 15 is one such house. I saw its exciting potential immediately.
I love building an auspicious house. I enjoy tapping into old energy and revitalizing it, making local landlords happy and cared for. It is lucky to have an auspicious house next door – mutual good fortune rubs off on each other. This creates a nice neighbourhood.
The challenge here was to create a Period 8 house that taps into the auspicious new energy of the current period. The bonus here was that this is an elevated piece of land where it was not necessary to make any structural changes. This was also a lucky house, as the previous occupant had made his fortune here and had moved on to a much bigger place. But it was an old house. There were too many little rooms tucked into cramped corners. The winding narrow staircase and heavily stained water feature beneath it had to be removed and replaced.
The house looked tired. Its veins and arteries – wiring and plumbing – needed to be changed. Most of all, the house needed new heaven, earth and mankind energy to revitalize the chi within. It was badly crying out for a new roof, new floor, new doors and new windows.
We demolished the entrance, the old stairs, and the overhanging beams and built a brand new entrance that was wide and spacious, relocating it to the center of the front elevation to capture the all-powerful 8 water and mountain stars in the Flying Star chart.
It is only when one is building a new house or making extensive renovations that one can really transform the energy of any home. This is done by adding important features that enable the effect of the powerful flying stars of the current period to emerge.
I used this house as a CASE STUDY for the students of my most recent MASTER PRACTITIONERS COURSE in feng shui and it was truly the most incredible way to explain the complexities of the Flying Star formula. I really believe this is the best way to teach the practical application of feng shui. I am happy to report that they loved the experience!
We changed the roof to revitalize the heaven energy of the home. We dug out the fading marble floor and laid on lovely hardwood finishing instead. This rejuvenated the Earth energy of the house. Finally, we installed new doors and put in floor-length French windows to bring more light into the house, thereby transforming it into a Period 8 house.
We knocked down walls and made the living area feel and look more spacious. The living room flows into the dining area, so that visually it is all one big space. This is one of the easiest and most effective ways of making sure every part of the first level of the house benefits from the auspicious 8 of the flying stars.WHAT IS THE AUSPICIOUS 8?
This is the number 8 water star, which brings wealth and prosperity energy, and the number 8 mountain star, which brings excellent good health and fabulous relationship luck. Spacious living is probably the most effective way of capturing the auspicious flying stars causing lucky chi energy to flow through the home unimpeded, never getting blocked or trapped in tight corners or tiny rooms. There is no place for negative chi to form and accumulate, or stagnate and cause yin spirit formation!
Working with my son-in-law, Chris, who was a great help really because he gave me the crucial design and structural inputs i.e. what I can and cannot do, we introduced some pretty savvy feng shui features into the house, and here, the pictures should speak louder than words. The following were some of the major things we did to create excellent up-to-date feng shui for the home.
AUSPICIOUS TRANSFORMATIONS
- We transformed the home into a vibrant period 8 house
- We moved the main entrance to the center facing palace
- We regularized the shape of the house with no more missing corners
- We reshaped the house to create auspicious dimensions throughout
- We successfully captured the 8 facing water star and the 8 sitting mountain star
- The swimming pool was located in the Southwest to attract immediate wealth luck
- A skylight was created to bring in auspicious heaven chi (for windfall luck)
- A view of distant houses attract a flow of continuous new energies
- The back of the house was built solidly against the hill to ensure good support.
The house is almost done now, so I have been busy this past month selecting the trees and the plants to ensure there is equally good landscaping feng shui. It is so important to soften the modern lines of glass panes, white walls and granite floors. This is done with specially selected trees and I usually prefer trees that have small leaves. This discourages mosquitoes. Trees should also have leaves in the most pleasing shades of green as they filter the hot tropical sunlight of Malaysia.
It is important that the home attracts birds into the garden and this is done with specially-placed auspicious water features and decorative items. The garden makes living on landed property very meaningful, as it lets the occupants tap into the vast energy of the earth. This brings long-lasting abundance. The pool of water brings wealth luck. A good view of the blue skies above, especially when you can see the sun in the daytime and the moon at night, brings cosmic blessings from beyond, and if you feel gentle breezes kiss your face, these are the local spirits welcoming you!
