Buying a New House?

Your surroundings exert a huge influence on your life. It affects your personal health, your happiness and your wealth. It has a direct bearing on the opportunities that come to you. Selecting a house with good feng shui should thus feature significantly in your house-buying decision. The best time to invest in feng shui advice would thus be when you are investing in a new property.

Feng shui is a living skill that has in recent years become widely practiced. Literally translated, feng shui means wind water – and this refers to the environment of surrounding land, mountains, buildings, roads and rivers that generate the Chi or cosmic energy that determines whether one’s home has good or bad feng shui.

When you buy a new house, it is beneficial to take note of some basic guidelines. Look out for poison arrows. These can take many different forms and shapes and the modern environment of today has many different types of structures that can become the poison arrows affecting your home. They do not just take the form of triangular rooflines, sharp edges, tall buildings or even a tree trunk directly blocking your door or driveway. Sometimes they can also be caused the hostile design of the building opposite you, or the transmission tower rising high in front of your house.

The skill of the feng shui consultant is to see if any of the houses or structures around you can be termed a poison arrow, and if so, to offer good advice on how to overcome its bad energy.

When you purchase a new house therefore, you need to first look at the physical structures that surround the house. You should always be on the lookout for killing energy, which is described as tangible energy.

Listed here are some basic feng shui guidelines any new house buyer will find useful.

First, look at the roads that surround your house. Is there a road that is directly facing any part of the house? Is the house facing a T-junction or a straight road? The general rule is your house should not be “hit” by an oncoming straight road that is aimed directly at the house. If there is, then it is better to choose another house, even if the afflicted house is being offered at a “special” price. These days, houses with bad feng shui are often offered at a discount from market price.

Second, buy a house that is on ground that is level with the road, or higher. Houses that are situated on the side of a hill or where the back slopes away from the house are “losing ground”. It is always better to buy a house where the back is higher. Look for a house with a large mountain or a building behind it rather than an open space. The open space should be in front of the house. If land behind is lower, the house is likely to cause problems for its residents unless remedial measures are taken.

Third, look for natural water and check the direction of its flow. Water in front is always better and water should flow pass the main door from right to left if the house faces a secondary direction. It should flow the other way if the house is facing a primary direction. A wrong flow of water makes it difficult for residents to do well in their career. Water flow here refers to monsoon drains as well.

Fourth, make sure that the design of the house facade is not threatening the house opposite, e.g. by having a triangular roofline. This can easily cause the neighbor to retaliate with a feng shui cure and if they hang a PA KUA symbol to face you, you are sure to get hurt.

Fifth, look at what is facing the house. If the house is facing open land or has a wide-open area in front of it, then it has a “bright hall effect”. This is excellent feng shui and very auspicious. Sometimes this one feature alone can bring incredible good luck.

Lastly, check the compass direction and then work out the orientation of the house. Buy a house that faces your best direction according to the eight mansions KUA formula.

The above are just simple guidelines to take note of and they are suitable for an amateur practitioner. Obviously, there is a great deal more to feng shui than the few pointers indicated, but these are basic and very important environmental features to look for. Often however, it can be extremely beneficial to obtain the help and advice of a qualified feng shui consultant. The investment truly would be worth the expense. Unlike just a decade ago however, it is not difficult now to find a reasonably well-qualified feng shui consultant that gives comprehensive feng shui reading of a house for a reasonable price.

Purchasing a new house is a very big, and probably the biggest, financial decision in anyone’s life. It is thus definitely worthwhile to seek the help of a feng shui consultant to undertake a feng shui investigation of the house you wish to purchase. This could save you years of aggravation and would at least guarantee that you will not have too much trouble as soon as you move in.

Selecting a Feng Shui Consultant

Always use an honest professional who has some credentials. Stay clear of feng shui consultants who give themselves grand titles. Remember that feng shui is an esoteric skill and usually you will find that the more humble a practitioner is, the more knowledgeable and experienced he/she is. Always look at how successful the feng shui consultant is.
The practice of feng shui is not necessarily very difficult – but it does require fastidious work. Advanced feng shui consultations require detailed investigations and analysis that can take some time to think through, and write up. The application of advanced formulas for instance requires careful drawing up of house charts and time charts.

As in any profession, the best is to use a consultant who offers follow up services and whose integrity is above question. It helps if you yourself already know some basic feng shui, since this enables you to judge whether or not the person investigating your house has the advanced knowledge and experience that you seek.
