USE A LITTLE HELP FROM FENG SHUI… HERE’S HOW

1Change your sleeping direction – reorientate the marriage bed so that the couple are sleeping with the head pointed to the man’s nien yen direction under the Eight mansions KUA formula method. This is the family luck orientation and when you sleep with this orientation it brings wonderful family luck to husband and wife. Everything is harmonious for them, including their fidelity to each other and the fulfillment of their wish to start a family.

2Place a pair of fertility elephants on the table beside the bed inside the bedroom. They can be any size… if you like them large then place them on the floor flanking the bed. The Chinese believe that the elephant is a precious symbol which brings family luck and the image of one with its trunk down attracts children into the family. In Beijing, the road that leads to the Ming tombs is lined with huge life sized elephant sculptures. Local folklore has it that any mother wishing for a son need only rub the back of any of these elephants.

3An excellent method to attract fertility luck – place the image of a bunch of pomegranates in the bedroom. Pomegranates are excellent symbols of fertility. having the real thing is great but if you cannot find them, then a painting or picture of them will do just as well.

4Place the Medallion of Kuan Yin holding a baby near to your bed. It is believed that when you place an image of Kuan Yin holding on to a baby, she will help you conceive and bring you children with good attitudes and they will be filial. Another image for improving fertility is the Fertility Tara. In this case, you can display the Fertility Tara on your home altar and offer her some flowers and 7 small bowls of Water.

5And finally, here is the method I like the best … hang a picture of one hundred children in the house, on a wall which you cannot fail to see each time you enter the home. This is a famous painting and most Chinese emporiums should carry this. If you cannot find such a painting then look for a painting or photograph of a cute child or baby and then hang it on the wall. Baby chi is most powerful and in Taoist feng shui like attracts like… so if you want children, have children images in the home.

There are so many wonderful benefits that come from displaying a large picture or painting of the whole family, highlighted on the main wall in the main living room area of any home. The family portrait instantly puts the spotlight on the togetherness aspect of the family, featuring the strong Patriarch, the nurturing Mother and the sweet children of the family, with siblings staying true and loyal to one another. This brings instant excellent family feng shui to the household, signifying the intimacy and the inseparableness of household members, instantly activating the power of visual feng shui.

FAMILY PORTRAITS CREATES HAPPINESS AURA IN THE HOME

This is an essential component in the Happiness Aspiration of all feng shui practice. If you want your family to stay devoted to each other, never getting separated from each other for whatever reason and always staying safe as a family unit, one of the easiest ways of ensuring this is to arrange to take a family picture of all members of the family smiling or laughing and obviously happy and secure in each other’s company. Let the camera capture the spirit of intimacy, the feeling of security and the depth of love that flow between each other.

The camera never lies, so it is good to choose an auspicious day to take the family picture. It is vital that the smiles captured are real, so every member in the picture should be feeling reasonably happy with each other. Most times, carefully planned pictures do not work as well as pictures taken of a family on vacation or doing something they love doing. Then selecting a picture that spontaneously reveals the genuine joy of the family would be ideal.

Make your feng shui family portrait as large as the room can take, so make sure you take your pictures in high resolution so the picture can be blown up big without looking murky or hazy. And let there be enough light, so outdoor pictures with good natural light always look better. if there is a suggestion of the sun’s rays sending blessing energy into the picture, it will be even more auspicious!

It is usually better not to have three people in a picture, but if there are only three of you making up the family, you can create a triangle in the way the people are positioned in the picture. In any case, family portraits are always luckier when the people are not placed in a straight line. It is always better to create a “mountain” effect, as this engages the feng shui strength of the mountain symbol. In Flying Star feng shui, the mountain star always stands for family harmony, excellent relationship luck and good health.

Family vacation shots are also when everyone is at their most relaxed, so these are great moments to capture and then use to ensure that the happiness of their being together stays with them. BUT THESE PICTURES MUST BE DISPLAYED. They have no power when they get locked away or are hidden inside photo albums that are stored inside cabinets. Then they become memories, not living testimony to the togetherness of the family!

BEING MINDFUL OF THE FIVE ELEMENTS

It is also a good idea that the picture contains all the symbolism of the five elements. This is the ultimate “secret” ingredient of many feng shui enhancers and cures. There is great power when all the five elements of Earth, Fire, Wood, Water and Metal are present, and this can manifest as colours, shapes, numbers or actual symbolism of the elements. Thus group family portraits can be extremely effective when crafted with good feng shui inputs.

When there is a beautiful family picture hanging in the living room, where everyone in the picture is shown smiling and looking secure and safe in each other’s company, the picture itself ensures protection against anyone splitting the family. It protects against intruders or third party interference coming in to break apart the togetherness of the family. This is one of the best and most effective ways of countering the influence of potential troublemakers. It is for this reason that I encourage my daughter, my niece and my nephew to always display pictures of their whole family – mother, father and two kids each – either hung up on the walls of the main rooms or placed around the home in frames on table tops, on pianos and cabinets!

I also encourage them to take family holidays, for this is when the best “happiness” pictures will get taken.

There is enormous power in harnessing the power of the visual image, and in today’s world when digital technology has revolutionized picture-taking to such an extent, there really is no excuse for not using visual feng shui techniques to enhance the quality and happiness of your life – and few things bring greater meaning to life or happiness as real as that brought about by the sense of family.

KEEPING YOUR PICTURES UP-TO-DATE

There is a time dimension to the practice of feng shui, and energy is a dynamic force. Energy is never static as it is constantly on the move, constantly evolving. Thus, in the same way that good feng shui needs to be updated, likewise, your family portrait also requires regular updates. Parents grow older with each passing year and children grow up faster than we realize. They develop personalities and get involved in new activities as they grow from babies to teenagers to adults.

The family portrait should reflect the changing stages of our lives and if not each year, then at least every few years, the family picture should get refreshed. There should not be a limit to the number of family pictures you display inside your home, and indeed, it is the presence of these pictures that prevents the formation of loneliness energies. If you want to permeate your home with love and friendship vibrations, then start displaying pictures that give you snapshots of memory moments of happiness.

POWER OF FAMILY PORTRAITS

If you could see into the intimate spaces of some of the most famous of families, you will find that in many cases, powerful matriarchs like the British Queen for instance fill every room in every one of her homes with framed pictures of her husband, her children, her sister, her mother and father, and these days, also her grandchildren and great-grandchildren! Thus despite the divorces and broken marriages of her children, nevertheless, her own marriage and her own family has stayed powerfully together and strong!

I have followed the fortunes of the Queen for a long time, as she is one of the icons of the past and present century I have admired for a long time; and I have always believed that for her, the power of feng shui is instinctive. She has dressed and lived with excellent feng shui all her life! She has made every palace of hers come to life with her insistence for pomp and ceremony, but she also insists on family gatherings throughout the year! Most of all she believes in images! Like I say, each time we get a glimpse into her private spaces, there will always be rows of portraits on her desk and on her side cabinets. There are even pictures of her dogs and horses!

The same can be said of all the SUCCESSFUL business dynasties of the world; the Estee Lauder family for instance is probably one of the most successfully managed thriving family business that is also a publicly-traded company. I just read a story of the two sons of the old lady who founded the company, and the pictures that accompanied the story reveal beautiful family pictures hanging on the walls of their private offices. I noticed that their table tops and cabinets had beautifully-framed pictures of family members, sons and daughters bringing their private world to life. This added much to the story on their company and on Estee Lauder’s son Ronald Lauder. I was very taken with the story. It inspired me to write this and encourage everyone to display family portraits.

Estee Lauder’s office on the 44th floor on Fifth Avenue, which has been kept exactly as it was.

There is a wonderful supremacy in the power of the visual image. Family portraits encapsulate all the vitality and inner fire of the members of the family. How easy it is to harness this incredible and powerful inner momentum! Those of you reading this, if you have not already done so, I do suggest you take this piece of advice to heart.

The kua number of auspicious directions can be applied in the dining room to benefit all members of the family. Use a compass to check the direction that each place setting will be facing and then allocate that place to one member of the family.

There is greater flexibility of directions if you use an eight-sided Pa Kua table, but you can use any kind of dining table and round tables are said to be very auspicious. Square and rectangular tables are also acceptable from a feng shui viewpoint. But make sure that no one sits at the corners. Never eat with the corner pointed directly at your stomach as this is very inauspicious.

The Basic Rules of Dining Right

Choose your Nien Yen (love) direction as your dining direction. You do not need to use your wealth direction. When all the family are facing their wealth direction, the amount of aggressive yang energy generated can sometimes cause heated argument to arise over the dinner table. You should also not eat facing one of your four bad directions, especially your total loss direction. Doing so brings enormous bad luck indeed.

Tips for the Dining Room

  1. Try not to have a toilet opening off or sharing any wall of the dining room. If there is a toilet, keep the door closed all the time. The foul energy coming out from there is harmful.
  2. Have a wall mirror to reflect the food on the table as this doubles your good fortune.
  3. Do not eat directly under a toilet on the upper floor above your table. This is really bad luck!
  4. Do not eat in the basement or lowest part of your home.
  5. Have the dining room deeper into your home. If you eat too near the front door, your wealth tends to seep out.
  6. Make sure there is brightness and a good colour scheme in the room.
  7. Place the Fuk Luk Sau in the dining room. These Three Star Deities encompass all the aspirations of mankind and attract a great deal of good fortune.

Designing a Feng Shui Dining Room

  1. Place the dining area at, or very near to, the center of the house, as this represents the heart of the home.
  2. The more spacious the dining room, the better the luck of the family will be.
  3. There should ideally be one solid wall in this room which should be behind where either the father or mother sits.
  4. Dining rooms that are part of the living area are excellent.
  5. Try and locate the dining room in an area of the home that has good Flying Star numbers.
  6. Kitchens placed next to the dining area should be level with or below the level of dining room. Never have the dining room in a “sunken” part of the home.
  7. Try not to have protruding corners or exposed overhead beams in the dining area. Being hit by poison arrives as you eat is the surest way of contracting serious illnesses.

The Effect of Poison Arrows in the Dining Room

The effects of poison arrows from different directions are as follows:

  • Southwest will cause womb and stomach problems such indigestion and miscarriage.
  • North affects your kidneys and ears.
  • East results in illness associated with the lungs and feet.
  • Northwest gives you headaches and severe migraine.
  • West causes lung problems and danger to the head.
  • Northeast causes back problems and vulnerability to accidents affecting the hands and fingers.
  • Southeast causes illness associated with the thighs, the buttocks and also cause you to be easily susceptible to the flu and colds.
  • South causes heart and eye problems.

Correcting Negative Chi in the Dining Room

  • Place a potted plant in front of the sharp edges of any protruding corner or column.
  • Move the dining table out from under exposed overhead beams.
  • Overcome the heavy energy from exposed overhead beams by placing a pair of bamboo flutes in the shape of an “A” over the edge of the beam.
  • Place curtains or blinds at windows to disguise ugly views.
  • Protect the dining area from excessive glare from the sun using curtains or blinds.
  • Check the Flying Star natal chart numbers of the dining area and use element therapy to overcome the effect of bad number combinations in the chart.

The main bedroom is the most important bedroom, as it has an enormous effect on the harmony of the home, on the well-being of its occupants and on the finances of the household.

There are four important things you need to consider:

  1. The shape of the bedroom
  2. The positioning of the bed
  3. The sector the bedroom occupies
  4. Decorative objects in the bedroom

It is best to have a rectangular or square shaped bedroom. If your bedroom has an irregular shape, try to use a good fortune symbol screen as a divider. This will transform the bedroom into a more regular shape. Never use mirrors as a feng shui cure for the bedroom.

Position your bed such that your head is pointed towards your best direction according to your Kua number. You can check your best direction here. If you cannot position your bed to face your best direction, at least try and have it face one of your other good directions.

For allocation of bedrooms, you can decide according to the later heaven Pa Kua trigrams placed around the eight directions. According to this arrangement, each direction has a representative member of the family. The chart on the right presents different members of the family and their corresponding directions.

The yin component plays an important role in the bedroom. This is because it is a place to rest, recuperate and relax. Do not make your bedroom too yang. The energy in the bedroom should suggest calm and quiet. The colour scheme used should be muted. Lighting should be dimmed and there should not be a television in the bedroom. However, make sure it is not too yin. For example, if you are lacking of energy, you may benefit from a red (yang) bedsheet.

Use your own judgement when planning the feng shui of your bedroom. Do not go overboard when decorating. You can energize the bedroom for marriage, romance, love and relationships. Place a pair of mandarin ducks, rose quartz puffed hearts and other love symbols in the SW of your bedroom to activate this kind of luck. The bedroom should however not be used to energize for wealth luck. It is better to energize for wealth luck in the public areas of the home such as the living room or dining room.

Key Taboos To Watch Out For In The Bedroom

  1. The bed should not be placed directly below an exposed beam.
  2. Do not position the bed so it faces another bedroom door.
  3. Do not position any mirrors facing the bed.
  4. The bed should not be placed between 2 doors.
  5. Neither should the bed face a protruding corner.
  6. The headboard must be placed against a wall. It should not be “floating”.
  7. Never move the bed when the wife is pregnant
  8. The bedroom should not be located above a garage, storeroom or kitchen.
  9. Do not have the bedroom door face the top of the stairs.
  10. Do not sleep in a room directly below a toilet.
  11. Do not have fancy archways in your bedroom.
  12. Do not place potted plants or an aquarium in the bedroom.
Compass Direction Sector Suitability
Northwest Patriarch of the family, Master Bedroom
Southwest Matriarch of the family, Family Room
East Eldest son
West Youngest daughter
South Middle daughter
North Middle son
Southeast Eldest daughter
Northeast Youngest son
