Numerology plays a big role in Chinese culture. In feng shui, we use numbers to represent the five elements in the Eight Directions and Flying Star methods. They are also used to predict the future and determine the Chi quality of any space but more often than not, people attribute the meaning of these numbers to Chinese words that sound phonetically similar. There are numbers that are coveted and numbers that are avoided like the plague, so anytime the Chinese have a choice, they will always try to own the luckiest number combinations possible.

But which are the lucky numbers and how can we use them to our advantage?

Here’s a quick guide to get you started.

THE MEANING OF NUMBERS

THE NUMBER 8 is considered one of the luckiest numbers because it sounds like fatt in Cantonese and is believed to make you rich. It is also the second furthest number from 1 in the sequence 1-9, and your luck is said to be greatest when you are just below the top. Numbers like “8”, “88” and “8888” are thus the most popular numbers. It should not however have the number 5 preceding it, as this changes the meaning completely to “unable to prosper”.

THE NUMBER 3 is generally viewed as a good number. Phonetically in Cantonese, the word for the number 3 sounds like sang, which means “to be alive”. One of the popular combinations that include this number is “328” which carries the meaning “doing well in business”.

THE NUMBER 6 is also very auspicious because it is pronounced luk, which sounds like the word for “profitable”. Furthermore, 6 is twice 3, which means “a doubling of everything you have”. If you have the car number “1368”, this means, “your wealth luck will continue to double over time”.

THE NUMBER 9 sounds like kau, meaning “having more than enough”. It is the number that represents longevity and abundance. A very lucky number to use for the next 20 years as it is set to become the number of Current Prosperity on Feb 4th 2024, bringing great wealth as well! Be careful not to pair it with the number 6 though, as the number 69 indicates a “total loss”.

THE NUMBER 1 is also a good number. It represents unity and coming out first place, and combines very well with other lucky numbers such as 1998, 1389 and 1689.

THE NUMBER 2 sounds like yi, the word for “easy”. It is often placed in front of other auspicious numbers like 23, 26 and 28. These numbers translate to mean “easy growth”, “easy profitability” and “easy prosperity”. However, it is most unlucky to place 2 in front of 4, as then it would sound like “easy to die”. Definitely not something any of us would want!

THE NUMBER 5 sounds like ng, which means “will not”. It is thus best to combine it with 4 because together, they bring the meaning “will not die”. 5 should never be combined with a lucky number, because then it negates the luck. For example, 58 means “will not prosper” and 53 means “will not expand”.

THE NUMBER 7 sounds like chat, which means certainty. This number is best combined with the numbers 2 or 8, where it means “prosperity for sure”. Avoid placing the number 7 with unlucky numbers such as 4, which means “sure to die”.

THE NUMBER 4 is the number that everyone tries to avoid because its Cantonese equivalent, sei, means “to die”. You will never see a Chinese-owned building with rooms and floors numbered 4, 14, 24 etc, as this is believed to bring bad luck, attract wandering spirits and harmful yin energy. However, the number 4 is not always bad! For instance, the number 48 means “prosperity by any means” and 43 means “even if you die, you will live”. When combined with 5, such as 54, it carries the meaning “will not die”.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLES

This form of numerology is used everywhere from personalized phone numbers and car number plates to deciding which properties to purchase or lottery numbers to buy. During Chinese New Year, red packets containing auspicious denominations of cash like 28, 88 and 128 enhance the blessings of good fortune. You’ll also find assets that are numbered auspiciously having higher resale values than those that are not, which is a good enough reason to choose your numbers right!

Start surrounding yourself with auspicious numbers wherever you can and watch your luck improve immediately.

Numerology is an important part of our lives. Numbers pop up all the time, in house numbers, car numbers… what most people want is for these personalized numbers to be lucky for them. But how does one start when choosing numbers? We investigate this further.

In feng shui, we use numbers to represent the five elements in the Eight Directions and Flying Star methods. It is also used to predict the future and to determine the Chi quality in any space. However, for car numbers, people use a different method.

The three white numbers together means to double your profits daily!

For cars, people are most fond of numbers that phonetically sound like auspicious words in Chinese. Most have a preference for prosperous numbers such as “8”, “6” or “9” to form auspicious combinations such as “168”, “8998” or “8888”. Twos and threes are also popular.

SH Tan, Hyundai car dealer, says of his customers, “90% of the time, they want to choose their own number. It’s usually the Chinese and Indians who choose, but nowadays, Malays are also getting smart, because cars with good numbers are easier to resell.” But how much are people really willing to pay to get themselves a lucky number?

Says Tan, “If you’re not fussy and you just want to avoid the bad numbers, it will cost you RM210. This goes ups to RM310 if you want to jump queue and get a number that hasn’t come up yet.” I can handle RM210, not much if you consider what you’d be paying for the car.

He continues, “But if you want repeated numbers, especially the really popular ones, you need to tender for the number, and you should be prepared to pay anything from RM2K to RM15K. Numbers like 2288 will normally cost you 2-3K, while if you want 8888, that’ll be anything from 10K up.”

This number spells prosperity, prosperity and more prosperity! If you can afford a number like this one, go for it!

Well, I’d be willing to fork out 210 or even 310, but to spend a few thousand on a car number plate’s a bit steep, feng shui or no feng shui! So I figured for the majority of us, it makes better sense to investigate how to choose a lucky number without having to pay through your nose.

THE MEANINGS OF NUMBERS

So how does one go about choosing numbers? Well, first, you need to know the meaning of each number.

The number 8 is considered one of the most auspicious, because it is believed that it’ll make you rich. It is also the 2nd furthest number from 1 in the sequence 1-9, and your luck is said to be greatest when you are just below the top. Eight also stands for growth and expansion. In addition, eight is also the “future prosperity” number in period 7 (the period we are currently in) and will become “present prosperity” when we enter period 8 on Feb 4th, 2004. Thus, the number 8 has become by far the most popular to have on one’s car number plate.

Single numbers are very limited, thus fetch a premium price. “3” on its own means life and growth, & considered very auspicious on a car.

The number 3 is generally viewed as a good number, as it represents “life”. Phonetically in Cantonese, three sounds like sang, which means to live. One of the popular combinations that includes the number 3 is “328”. This means you will “easily do well in business”.

The number 6 is also very auspicious because it has the sound luk, which sounds like the word for “profitable”. Furthermore, 6 is twice 3, which means “doubling of everything you have”. If you have the car number “1368”, this means, “your wealth luck will continue to double over time”.

The numbers 1 and 9 are also good numbers. The number 1 represents unity, while the number 9 stands for longevity. These combine well with other lucky numbers, such as in 1998, 1389, etc.

Must be reassuring to have Jesus travel with you on all your journeys. Unfortunately for us here in Malaysia and Singapore, you can only get such all-letter number plates in the USA.

The number 2 sounds like yi, the word for “easy”. It is thus often placed in front of other numbers e.g. 23, 26 or 28. These combinations translate to mean “easy growth”, “easy profitability” and “easy prosperity”. However, it is most unlucky to place 2 in front of 4, as then it would sound like “easy to die” – not what you want on your car for sure!

The number 5 sounds like ng, which means “will not”. It is thus best to combine it with 4. Because 4 sounds like “die”, 54 means “will not die”. 5 should never be combined with a lucky number, because it negates the luck. E.g. 58 means “will not prosper” and 53 means “will not expand”.

The number 7 sounds like chat, which means certainty. This number is best combined with the numbers 2 or 8, where it means “prosperity for sure”. Avoid placing the number 7 with unlucky numbers such as 4, which means “sure to die”.

The number 4 is the number that everyone tries to avoid in their car number. 4 means “die” in Cantonese! However, the number 4 is not always bad. For instance, 48 means “prosperity by any means” and 43 means “even if you die, you will live”. Or when it is combined with 5, such as 54, it means, “will not die”. The easy rule is never to place 4 at the end of a string of numbers.

PERSONALIZED LUCKY NUMBERS

For the die-hard fans!

It’s not just the exalted eights, sixes and nines that bring luck. Some apparently unlucky numbers can be lucky for certain people. For example, 4 & 5 are usually deemed unlucky, but if your personal Kua is four or five, these numbers are lucky for you. However, numbers like eight and nine are lucky for everyone, so if your car has more than one driver, it might be better to go for the universally lucky digits.

Also, if your car is collectively lucky, it will be easier to sell. Says Ng Wee Hock, a second-hand car dealer, “It’s funny, but one of the first things people look at is the car number. If the number is lucky, then it’s less trouble and they are more willing to buy quickly. If they really like a car but don’t like the number, they either don’t buy or they want us to arrange to change the number.”

What’s considered really taboo when it comes to numbers then? I ask. Ng replies. “Usually people don’t like a lot of 7’s together, as 7 also sounds like scolding people. 6 and 9 are also not good when next to each other (69) – that sounds like your car is a total loss. And 4’s are definitely not OK when you talk to a Chinese.

Well, it’s good to know that my car number ain’t have to be 8888 to be lucky But just to be safe, I think I’ll be a RM210 groupie and get myself at least an acceptable “lucky” number.

A rose by any name does not smell equally sweet. Nor as well endowed! These days, the world is turning increasingly esoteric, and with the imminent arrival of another very important new baby – yes we are referring to the forthcoming second child of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge – We are carrying this important feature on crafting a name! Our Numerology expert brings you powerful pointers to get things right, bright and beautiful for those of you with a baby on the way!

Will the name of the Kate Middleton’s second child bring luck to the future monarchy of England?

As we go to print, the world awaits the arrival of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s next child! With the due date confirmed for April, everyone is speculating as to whether the new royal will be a prince or a princess! If the clues left by Kate are anything to go by, then baby number 2 is a Princess! Already, Kate has been spotted shopping for pink baby clothes and ordering pink colour samples for her royal nursery!

There is also lots of hot discussion on what they plan to name their new bundle of joy! British bookies have already declared ALICE, CHARLOTTE and ELIZABETH as the hot favourites for a girl, and JAMES or ARTHUR for a boy. For girls, ALICE is the name currently leading in the betting charts! Will this be an auspicious name for the new royal? You, the reader, can work this out by following these useful tips for crafting an auspicious name.

THE MEANING OF A CHILD’S NAME

All expecting parents share the exciting and somewhat daunting task of choosing the perfect name for their newborn. The choice is endless! Just visit babynames.com and you will find thousands of names you can filter by Jewish, Irish, German, African, Arabic, Italian, Asian or whatever heritage you wish!

But here’s a starting point: make a list of all the names that you as a parent feel a strong connection with. Once you have a list, check the meaning of each name and do basic research on historic figures associated with the name. Rule out names with negative connotations or those that make you feel uncomfortable. For instance, did you know the Spanish name “Lola” means “Sorrow”, or that “Jezebel” has unwholesome connotations?

For Kate and William, the boys names put forward – JAMES and ARTHUR – are strong traditional British names, but carry secret meanings that could cause potential problems for the monarchy. The name “Arthur” is generally associated with King Arthur of Camelot who ruled Britain during the late 5th century. The name “Arthur” means “Bear”, a powerful animal who can survive the coldest winters. It is a strong name for a first born son, but could prove too powerful for a prince who is second in line to the throne, as his personality might well outshine that of the Crown Prince George. The other name suggested – “James” has an even more confrontational meaning. The name James means “to replace” or “to supplant”; again, not exactly appropriate for a second prince!

None of this is real cause for concern if our new royal turns out to be a princess! Any of the three names put forward have wonderful meanings. The current favourite “Alice” means “Noble Kin” and the second favorite “Charlotte” means “Free”. The third choice “Elizabeth” means “God is my Oath”, so all three have excellent connotations.

When choosing names, to stick wholesome names that do not carry overly ambitious aspirations for the child. Not all children are natural-born leaders or high-achievers, so think carefully before selecting names like “Raja” (Indian) or “Roy” (French) which translates to “King” unless your child is the first-born or an only child! It might also be good to take a look the child’s birth chart before deciding, as naming your child something too high and mighty usually leads to problems if the child cannot live up to the expectations of the name given!

NUMEROLOGY IN NAMES

Choosing names based on their meanings is a great start, but if you want your child’s name to work wonders for their future, there is a more sophisticated method available. Here, Indian Numerology stands out as one of the most practical methods.

Numerology experts explain that our names are not given to us “by chance”. There is some kind of cosmic influence at work, and each of us gets the names we deserve due to our past life karma. These are names our parents felt drawn to at the time of our birth, when the planets and constellations were aligned in a particular way. Consequently, our names reflect the influence of these planetary positions either positively or negatively.

Hence, the name that we use most often to identify ourselves has the power to shape our personalities, our success potential and our destiny. According to numerology, people with auspicious names have greater propensity to thrive well, and those whose names vibrate clashing energies can attract obstacles throughout their lives.

So how do we craft an auspicious name based on numerology? The complete method requires an entire book to explain, but it isn’t necessary to get it 100% perfect in order to enjoy positive results.

Here are some key things to get right:

A Match the first letter of your child’s Name to your child’s day of birth

In numerology lingo, the first letter of person’s name is known as the ASCENDANT letter, as its sound is the first to be enunciated whenever a person is called. Hence the ascendant letter has the greatest vibrational force in a name and exerts significant influence in one’s life. The other important numerical vibration comes from our day of birth, also known as the Psychic Number.

When both the ascendant letter and psychic number are in harmony, one is said to enjoy a more positive outlook, especially during childhood years up to early adulthood. On the other hand, if a person’s ascendant letter clashes with his or her day of birth, then from the time he/she is born, obstacles will tend to plague his or her life.

So for example, if your son is born 1st April, then his day of birth (psychic number) is 1. Any name that begins with the letter A, J or S (all these letters have numerological values of 1) supports his day of birth. 1 is the number of leadership and the planet Sun, and using a name that starts with A, J or S accentuates all the qualities and attributes associated with the number 1 in the person’s personality.

It is useful to note that the letters A (1) and J (10) are known as “natural 1s”. They are natural 1s because their position in the alphabet vibrates solely the qualities of the number 1. The letter S however, vibrates other hidden numbers. This is because S is the 19th letter of the alphabet and carries the original numerological value of 19. It reduces to 1 when the two digits 1 and 9 are added up. Hence the letter S vibrates qualities of 1, but it also vibrates hidden qualities of 9 because its original value is 19.

If for some reason you are unable to choose a name for your child that begins with an ascendant letter that matches his/her day of birth, you can also choose names that begin with letters that have a harmonious relationship with your child’s day of birth. The key here is to avoid names that begin with letters that clash with the day of birth. Below is a table that summarizes the relationship of all the different letters with every possible day of birth. Letters that are not listed here have a neutral relationship with the day of birth.

B The NAME NUMBER and DESTINY NUMBER

The second thing to work out is the DESTINY NUMBER of your child. The destiny number is derived by adding up all the numbers in your child’s birthdate (day, month and year) and then reducing it to a single digit. For example, a person born on 22nd December 1968 would end up with the destiny number of 4.

2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 6 + 8 = 31 ➞ 3 + 1 = 4
Note: If the destiny number reduces to 11, 22 or 33, do not reduce any further.

I mentioned earlier that the day of birth (psychic number) influences our lives a great deal, but much of its vibrational force peaks at early adulthood and begins to lessen as we progress towards middle age. Around the age of 35, it is our destiny number that begins to vibrate in greater force, and it is this number that exercises greater influence in one’s ultimate destiny.

Once you know the destiny number, you can begin the fun of calculating the NAME NUMBER of all the different names you have on your shortlist. The name number is derived by adding up all the letters of one’s FULL NAME (first and last name).

An auspicious name is one where its NAME NUMBER matches the DESTINY NUMBER or is harmonious with the DESTINY NUMBER. The auspiciousness is further enhanced if the first letter of the name (ascendant) carries a value that is also harmonious with the DESTINY NUMBER!

* note that 11 and 22 are special. If your child is born on day 11 or 22 of the month, then choose a name that begins with the letter K or V (respectively) as it is superior to all the other ascendant letters in the alphabet.

Below are all the harmonious and clashing number combinations:

Let’s work through an example:

In this example, we have worked out that Kim Kardashian’s Name Number is 11. And her Destiny Number is 22. Can you see why she has become such a huge sensation? 11 is a special number known as the Master Double. 22 is also a special Master Double! Both her name number and destiny number are in perfect harmony because 11 and 22 are very harmonious. Notice that in her case, Kim’s ascendant letter is K, which carries the numerological value of 11! This is in perfect harmony with her psychic number (1) as well as her destiny number. Definitely Kim Kardashian’s numbers are all in sync, and her name brings her very good fortune indeed!

C Look for names with DOUBLE LETTERS

Finally, when choosing names, look for those with double letters occurring in the middle of the name, as this brings an added bonanza of luck! For example: DEBBIE, TOMMY, ANNIE and so forth! Names with double letters occurring in the middle of the name vibrate special luck in their 20s and 30s. Names with double letters occurring towards the end of their name (e.g. SWANSONN, JOHANN) enjoy special luck towards their 40s and 50s.

In the case of William and Kate’s newborn, the name CHARLOTTE is the only one of the three names predicted that enjoys the double letter T. Whether this turns out to be auspicious for the child will depend on the exact date she is born!

Last article talked about how to derive birthdate charts based on one’s date of birth, and explained how this affects one’s disposition, behavior, personality and attitudes. This issue, we will be talking about the meanings of the numbers in the birth chart. Pythagoras in his studies indicated that most people possess a set of “dominant numbers” which then exert their influence on one’s personality traits. Dominant numbers are simply numbers that appear more than once in the birth chart. When your chart is balanced where there is no real indication of dominant numbers, it means good news, as such people tend to lead very balanced lives with little or no excess in the intellectual, spiritual or material dimensions.

During the 20th century, everyone was born between the years 1900 to 1999, so we find that everyone’s chart would contain the numbers 1 and 9. Since the number 1 belongs to the Intellectual plane, and the number 9 belongs to the Material plane, we see a lot of scientific progress as well as material gains. When we compare it to the 19th century where people were born between the years 1800 – 1899, we found great increases in wealth but not so much in the area of scientific progress due to the lack of the number 9.

MEANINGS OF THE NUMBERS IN THE BIRTH CHART IN THE PERIOD OF 8

THE NUMBER 1

Located in the center of the material dimension, the number 1 represents a person’s practical nature and his concerns over material needs. Having this number in your chart indicates that you have the potential to have a comfortable lifestyle.

Having a single 1 indicates average money; if there is also the 6 or 8 present, then the combination is very auspicious and you can be capable of great riches. However, if there is only the number 1, then you can be comfortable, but being obscenely wealthy is unlikely.

When you have two 1’s, the effect is doubled, bringing prosperity luck in small doses. If combined with the 6 or 8, it symbolizes a rich and comfortable life.

Three 1’s denotes a happy person, one whose material needs are always met and whose disposition attracts the presence of other wealthy persons into your life. When combined with the 6 or 8, luck become phenomenal, and combined with double 7’s, it indicates extreme good fortune.

Four or more 1’s indicates excessive concentration or obsession with the accumulation of material wealth.

THE NUMBER 2

This number belongs to the intellectual dimension, and indicates rational (or irrational) thinking. When found with other intellectual numbers, such as 9 or 4, this is a sign of a powerful intellect. Among the 3 intellectual numbers however, the 2 is considered the least fortunate, as it reflects more of the negative aspects of the intellect when compared to the other two numbers.

One 2, without the 9 or 4 present, signifies a mediocre mind; such people require lots of guidance and help. However, if both the 9 and 4 are also present, it indicates a mind that is strong, suitable for those who aspire to study law or medicine where there is a lot of reading and good memory required.

Two 2’s alone indicate possible mental disease, but when found with the 9 and 4, or in combination with the 5 and 8, brings good luck.

Three 2’s is totally inauspicious and on its own, without the 9 or 4, suggests illness and perhaps a short life.

Four or more 2’s is even more unbalanced and can mean a really short life, severe illness or even suicide.

THE NUMBER 3

This is one of the spiritual numbers, and symbolizes intuition and emotional strength. A chart that is missing the 3 does not mean an absence of feelings, just as many 3’s does not mean someone that is excessively emotional. Much of this has to do with balance, and how the numbers combines with others. Thus:

One 3 in the chart suggests a lack of sensitivity to cope with competitive situations, unless combined with 5 or 7 of the spiritual plane. People with a singular 3 in their chart often get their feelings hurt and can suffer from frequent headaches. Such people should avoid high-stress jobs.

Two 3’s indicates a higher level of intuition and sensitivity. These people are often believed to possess a high intelligence, capable of sniffing out false friends. When combined with the 5 and 7, it means someone who is spiritually inclined.

Three or more 3’s by themselves indicates someone who is hyper-sensitive, and as a result can be lost in a cocoon of emotional turmoil. Such people can come across aloof or even spiteful, unless there is some balance with the 5 or 7.

THE NUMBER 4

The number 4 represents the rational aspects of the intellectual dimension. People with this number in their chart are logical and meticulous, and they tend to be highly disciplined in their approach to life.

Individuals with one 4 have a flair for logical thinking. However, they tend to be skeptical and cautious when making decisions.

Two 4’s strengthens the effects of the number and can mean an individual who is intolerant and impatient. If you also have numbers in the spiritual plane, then this is tempered with a certain amount of compromise. However, if there are no numbers in the spiritual plane, the double 4 can bring dogmatic tendencies and a stubborn inclination to belittle others’ viewpoints or ideas.

Three or more 4’s indicates people who are extremely difficult to get along with. Such people should guard against extreme stubbornness, or failure will follow them through life.

THE NUMBER 5

This number governs the intensity of one’s feelings, and so exerts a strong influence on the power and passion of one’s emotions as well as the strength of one’s resolutions needed to render thoughts into action, and ambitions into results.

One 5 in the chart suggests emotional control, bringing reliability and groundedness. People who possess two 5’s can be easily recognized by the intensity of their inner fervour. They exude an air of confidence, which if supported by the 9 or 1, makes for a formidable individual. However, some of the negative aspects of the 5 can also be seen with arrogance and overbearing attitudes, unless balanced by numbers in the other two dimensions.

Three or more 5’s is very negative, and this means too much inner energy for one individual to handle. Unless balanced by other numbers on the spiritual plane, such individuals will burn out quickly.

THE NUMBER 6

The number 6 brings satisfaction in the material sense. It is considered very auspicious and indicates good protection against poverty. Thus having a 6 in your chart is a good indication of monetary health.

People with one 6 in their chart enjoy monetary luck and often do not need to worry too much about money, as somehow money will come to them when they need it. Even when down on their luck, such individuals will rarely suffer from hunger or poverty.

Two 6’s indicates a doubling of the creative ability for generating income. However, there may be some increased anxiety should any setbacks occur. The double 6’s should have the 3, 5 or 7 in their chart, as the lack of any of these balancing numbers indicates hypersensitivity to obstacles, and such people thus need a lot of encouragement.

Three or more 6’s indicates increased worries. But if there is the support of the 1 or 8 in the chart, material abundance will help alleviate fears of failure.

THE NUMBER 7

One of the spiritual numbers, the 7 indicates a fear of loss, and represents an interest in metaphysical studies or anything to do with the human existence.

One 7 in the chart when combined with the 8, 1 or 6 brings success together with compassion and kindness. On its own, the 7 brings desire for perfection.

Two 7’s in the chart aggravates the desire for perfection. Such people need to rationalize what is possible and learn to balance between the three major issues of love, money and health.

Three or more 7’s in the chart can indicate manic depressives when not balanced by other numbers on the spiritual plane.

THE NUMBER 8

This is the luckiest number in the chart and it brings lots of good fortune! We can see many people born in the 80’s enjoying plenty of good fortune.

The single 8 if combined with either the 6 or 1 means a life filled with good fortune.

Having two 8’s in the chart is very beneficial and indicates a high degree of success when running one’s own business. However, if there is a lack of other numbers in the two other planes, the double 8 brings about misfortune later on in life.

Having three or more 8’s indicates a delay in prosperity, when prosperity beckons but does not materialize.

THE NUMBER 9

The number 9 as the central number of the intellectual dimension represents the fullness of heaven and earth. Also known as a multiplying number, it exerts a strong influence on the effects of the other numbers in the chart. In this century, this number appears at least once in everyone’s chart, explaining why there has been so much progress made in technology and all fields of research.

One 9 in the chart brings self assurance, ambition and intelligence. There is high potential for success in all fields of academia as long as the chart is balanced with other numbers on the intellectual plane. If the birth chart is balanced with other numbers in all three planes, there is good news in terms of authority as well as an excellent career.

A double 9 is a sure sign of intellectual ability, with a love for acquiring more knowledge. The double 9 is an expression of idealism coupled with serious thought. People with the double 9 are level-headed and ruled by their head, and seldom by their heart, unless there is a heavier weighting in the middle numbers of 3, 5 and 7.

Three or more 9’s turns negative, as balance is lost; such people tend to be hot-tempered, impatient, insensitive and possibly even mentally unbalanced.

We can see that her chart possesses numbers in all the three dimensions, which means that this is someone who leads a well-balanced life. She has three sets of dominant numbers, namely the double 2, the double 5 and the double 1. The single 9, combined with the double 2, means she is someone who has a powerful intellect and who thinks rationally. The double 5, together with the 3 and the 9, indicates that she is one formidable person who can be a philanthropist and generous. This chart however is of someone who is very careful of whom she helps. The double 1 indicates big potential for material wealth. Indeed, the above is true, as she is not only well-known for being the greatest black billionaire philanthropist, she is also well known for her direct and no-nonsense views on her popular talk show “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. Her chart also possesses the special line of willpower.

THE LINE OF WILL POWER

This vertical line of 9, 5 and 1 brings a stubborn streak. At its most positive, it brings endurance, persistence and determination. However, at its worst, it gives rise to extreme stubbornness, and inflexibility. People with this line tend to be argumentative and do not take kindly to discipline imposed on them. Indeed, most successful politicians have this line in their chart, as it makes them tough enough to overcome all.

birthday numerology

Numerology is the use of numbers to determine lucky and unlucky energy flows within one’s environment, and this is applied to individuals using the numbers of their date of birth. Much of this aspect of numerology can be traced back to Western mathematical discoveries, including those of the Greek philosopher Pythagoras. Among the many discoveries made was that individuals who shared the same “dominant numbers” would have similar personality traits.

These “dominant numbers” were directly derived from the individual’s date of birth, and this led Pythagoras to the conclusion that there had to be a specific numerical relationship between someone’s behaviour, personality and attitude in life. Since Pythagoras, there have been many scholars who have carried on further research to broaden the spectrum of his numerology concepts.

To the Chinese, numerology has always been associated with the Magic Lo Shu Grid, which was discovered around 4000 years ago. The intrinsic patterns of the base chart, together with the way the numbers move about the grid, are believed to offer clues on the characteristics and outcomes of events within the environment. The Lo Shu grid is the central principle behind “Flying Star Feng Shui” and also used in the interpretation of individual birth charts.

The only difficulty posed is that the principle calculation of date of birth is based on the lunar calendar, while we are used to using the Gregorian calendar. As such, before we can even use numerology to read our birth chart, we need to convert the Western date to the equivalent lunar date. Fortunately, there are many websites available these days that makes it easy to convert between the two calendars.

The Magic Lo Shu Grid is shown on the right, and if you were to add up the numbers horizontally, vertically or diagonally, you will find that the sum comes to 15.

THE MEANING OF THE LO SHU GRID

The 3 rows of the grid represent the three dimensions of one’s personality; the Intellectual dimension, the Spiritual dimension, and the Material dimension.

INTELLECTUAL
SPIRITUAL
MATERIAL

A missing row corresponds to a person whose persona is lacking in the characteristics of that dimension.

THE INTELLECTUAL DIMENSION

The three numbers on the top row are 4, 9 and 2; these symbolize the intellectual capability and motivation, as well as the mental processes of thinking, analyzing, imaging, creating and so forth. They also represent the conscious awareness of the inner self. When combined with numbers on the material plane, it suggests awareness of facts and figures as well as desire for material gains. When the chart is devoid of numbers in the two other dimensions, it means the chart is completely out of balance and can be interpreted to represent someone who thinks so much that nothing can be achieved due to inaction.

To the Chinese, numerology has always been associated with the Magic Lo Shu Grid, which was discovered around 4000 years ago. The intrinsic patterns of the base chart, together with the way the numbers move about the grid, are believed to offer clues on the characteristics and outcomes of events within the environment.

THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION

The central numbers of 3, 5 and 7 represent the emotional nature of the person, including the degree of feelings, instincts as well as intuition. Having too many of the central numbers indicates someone of excessive emotions. If someone has many 5’s, it can mean the person is extremely emotional, while having too many 3’s indicates a quarrelsome character. And excess of 7’s indicates a person who uses emotions for their own selfish gains.

If there are missing numbers in the intellectual dimension, it suggests someone who is ruled by their heart and who reacts to situations in an emotional rather than logical manner. If there are missing numbers in the material dimension, it can mean someone who is willing to give up all material needs just to satisfy their emotional needs. Too many emotional numbers in the chart generally means that logical and rational thinking are lacking in that person.

THE MATERIAL DIMENSION

The numbers 8, 1 and 6 represent material success, abundance, wealth and prosperity. These numbers can also represent a lifestyle that too opulent, as well as an arrogance caused by an excess of material possessions. When these numbers dominate your chart with an absence of numbers in the other two dimensions, it suggests a personality that is cold and devoid of feelings – someone who is only interested in the pursuit of wealth and power.

If there are missing numbers in the intellectual dimension, it suggests a wealthy person who wastes away his riches, while missing numbers in the spiritual dimension indicates someone unwilling to share his wealth.

CALCULATING YOUR BIRTH CHART

So how does one construct one’s birth chart? Say you were born on 12th March 1953, the first thing you need to do is to convert the Western (Gregorian) date to the equivalent Lunar date. You can do so online (http://www.hko.gov.hk/gts/time/conversion.htm). After conversion the equivalent lunar date would be the 27th day of the 1st month in the year 1953. The date would be written as 27.1.1953 (lunar date).

At this point, you should be aware that for some years in the Lunar calendars, there are 13 months instead of the standard 12 months in the Western calendar. The numeral zero is not used as this is regarded as a complete number, appearing at the end and the beginning of the sequence of 1 through 9.

Construct the birth chart by writing the numbers that appears in the lunar date in the grid following the sequence according to the Lo Shu grid.

The chart on the right shows that it has 2, 7, the double 1, 9, 5 and 3. Take note that we omit numbers that do not appear in the lunar birth date. For this chart, we can see that as the numeral 1 appears twice, so the dominant number is 1. You will find that there will be charts that possess more than one dominant number, in which case, the person will exhibit the characteristics as a combination of the dominant numbers. In some rare cases, extremely balanced charts will not have a dominant number, as there are a maximum of eight numbers in a birth date. In this case, that person’s personality will constantly change as they move through life, although never in excess.

We can see from Justin Bieber’s chart that he has two dominant numbers of the double 9 and the double 1, with missing numbers in the spiritual plane.

JUSTIN BIEBER BORN:
1st March 1994
LUNAR BIRTHDATE:
20th day of the first lunar month in 1994 written as 20.1.1994

His chart has all the numbers in the Intellectual dimension with none in the spiritual dimension. As such, this is someone who is motivated by his head but never by his heart. The three numbers 4, 9 and 2 indicate someone of above average intelligence, and of strong analytical and creative abilities. However, because his chart is missing the Spiritual essence, he would be considered selfish, arrogant and self-centered, thinking only about how to better himself with no consideration for the needs of others. Furthermore, the double 9’s aggravate this trait of self centeredness.

The double 1’s in the Material dimension indicate good potential for temporary great wealth, but he lacks the 8 and 6 to balance and lengthen his material gains. His prosperity luck looks very short term; however, when it materializes, it can bring him lots of money. Overall, this person consistently lives his life in a manner that creates continuous bad karma – seeking only quick material gains at the expense of others. His career as a singer has already shown this analysis to be true, where his popularity rises very quickly, but just as quickly degenerates to the opposite.
