Roads are important purveyors of chi energy, especially for those who live in modern city environments. The approach roads to your home as well as major highways that surround your neighbourhood exert a far greater effect on your feng shui than you realize. Feng shui manuals that deal with the significance of roads are usually compass-based. This is because the direction of traffic flow is what determines the road’s effect – either benevolent or pernicious – on the feng shui of dwellings around it. First determine the “strength” of the roads around your home. When the road is a big one with plenty of traffic, the strength and potency of the chi generated is more powerful than if it were merely a small lane. City roads are said to exert great chi strength, but highways are usually even stronger. When the direction of the road is favourable to your home, then the stronger the road is, the more good luck it brings. Likewise, when the direction of flow is unfavourable, its negative effect is also greater.

Second, determine the speed of traffic flow. As a rule of thumb, when the traffic moves very fast, the chi created along the road is like a bullet bringing negative harmful energy. When the flow of traffic moves slowly, its chi energy is a lot more benevolent and therefore much more positive in its effects. Thus secondary roads (like those within suburban neighbourhoods, gated communities or housing estates) usually bring better feng shui than primary roads, ring roads or highways.

Thirdly, winding roads are generally more benevolent than straight roads. Roads that either “hug” your home or apartment building, or are winding in their approach towards your home usually bring better feng shui than roads that come straight at your entrance. In fact, when roads are straight and head directly towards your home or building, they take on the form of poison arrows. Such roads are generally considered bad feng shui.

Fourthly, elevated roads tend to be more harmful than roads that are on the same level as your home. Even when you live in an apartment building, unless you live on the upper levels, elevated roads can be very harmful when they seem to “cut” into your building. One can use element cures to counter the slicing effect of such roads, but generally they are hard to remedy. This is because roads usually carry very strong chi energy.

Fifth, when your home is sandwiched between two roads, the effect on your feng shui also tends to be negative. It is worse if one road is higher and another is lower. It is also worse when the road that is lower is behind your house, as this suggests there is absolutely no support. This is considered one of the danger configurations of roads.

Finally, take note of the direction of flow of the road and how it approaches your home, how it passes your front entrance, and how it flows away from the home. These compass directions offer detailed information on how the road affects the feng shui of your house or building. It also affects the feng shui of offices buildings. This is a compass-based formula that combines the information contained in the Yin and Yang Pa Kua arrangements of trigrams to reveal the kind of roads that bring different kinds of good or bad luck. The direction of roads is taken from the front of the house. If you have roads that pass your house, observe them carefully and take note of two important directions:

1. the direction that the traffic on the road is flowing
2. the direction of its incoming traffic and the direction of its outgoing traffic.

Stand just outside your house and take the direction of the road traffic coming towards the house and also the direction of the traffic leaving the house. Note that as long as you can see the road, it has an effect on the feng shui of your home.

This is regarded an excellent direction of traffic flow around your house or building. This road brings the luck of helpful people, wealth, success and continuous business luck. However, do note that traffic must move towards the house from the South and the road must then turn away from the house in a Northwest direction. It must not move in the opposite direction ( i.e. coming in from the NW and going away in a South direction.) When it moves in the opposite direction, the road brings loss, misfortune and sometimes even death, most likely to the breadwinner of the family. If there was a sign that the feng shui of my earth energy was cracking, this was it!


I could not wait to get the entire flooring repaired, as it is extremely dangerous to the feng shui foundation of my home. This is where friends and my cars leave and enter my home each day, and I have known family businesses that have collapsed as a result of their entrance floors cracking and them not repairing them.

When the top layer of wash-pebble flooring was drilled and swept away, I realized to my horror that the cracks went deeper, beyond being superficial cracks. Indeed, the cracks on the underlayer of concrete looked even worse. No wonder I had been ill the past month and feeling so out of sorts. I lost no time in strengthening the foundation with steel wire and fresh concrete, and took the opportunity to create a new floor with cement rendering finish, which by the way is all the rage with new house owners these days. Modern Architects love clean lines and the natural raw look, and many have been promoting the bare look of well-rendered cement finishing. Believe it or not, I recovered almost immediately and especially the aches and pains that made it impossible for me to even put on my socks and tie my shoelaces. I had been forced to stop my morning walks because I lacked the energy to take even a few steps, and I woke up in the mornings with searing pain in my lower back. All this while, I was teaching at my latest MPC program. It was quite a challenging time, but happily, as soon as my wonderful contractor and his skilled workers repaired my floors, I recovered in time to properly enjoy the graduation dinner.

The experience was awesome in that it reinforced once again my faith in the wonderful practice of feng shui, but it also drove home the point – of how vital it is to be mindful that good feng shui must never be taken for granted. Indeed, feng shui is a dynamic practice requiring updating and maintaining, and it is not about introducing additional formulas into one’s feng shui practice; as long as you use common sense and never delay on needed repairs, your feng shui will stay beneficial for you.

In my case, my problem was further compounded by the fact that the house that was diagonally across the road from my house was being demolished at exactly the same time, and it was at the direction of South, which houses this year’s TAI SUI. The wreckage of the house – and all the banging and digging that came with the demolition – sent shock waves to my home’s chi. You need never get stressed when you encounter bad situations, experience failures, get gossiped about, endure backbiting, politicking or betrayal from others. Even when you discover that your spouse has been unfaithful to you, you can use your mind to let the problem get minimized and then disappear into oblivion.

Problem situations as well as people who cause you grief can be kept from from ballooning into hot air inside your mind, causing headaches and distress. It is not easy to do this, to make a big problem seem small! In fact, it is a very difficult exercise, because the mind is usually much better at making something small into something big than the other way around.

If you find it difficult to shrink bad people and bad situations in your life into nothingness, if you are find it hard to visualize them getting vapourized into thin air, if the “problems” in your life continue to get bigger for you, here are 7 FENG SHUI WAYS you can try to get them out of your way altogether. So you do not just reduce them in size and magnitude, you actually get them out of your life forever. These methods have worked for many people that I’ve passed them on to.

1MAKE A PAPER BOAT with your problems written onto it, making sure you include everything that aggravates you about the situation. You can also include a wish that describes how you want the situation to be, or that will cause your problems to go away. Be as detailed as you want, and if all you want is for the problem to go away and you will leave it to the cosmic forces to come up with a perfect solution for you, then write it down exactly like this. Take the paper boat with you to the nearest river or big drain, and let it the waters carry your little boat with all your problems written on it into a bigger drain or a river or even into the sea. Do not look back after you have released the boat onto the water… you must mentally say goodbye to your problem! Let the winds and waters dissolve your problem for you. This is a very effective way to get a big problem out of your life. I gave this tip to a young lady and she did exactly as I told her to. She released her paper boat into the KL river along Klang Road… for her, the problem had been a very difficult boss, and within three weeks, her boss was transferred to another division. She could not believe how quickly the method worked. She has now become really good at making paper boats for her friends and colleagues!

2MAKE A BONFIRE of all your aggravations. Write down all the things causing you distress. Be careful how you word them, because what you are going to do is make a small charcoal fire and then firmly burn everything you have written down. The act of letting the fire consume your problems is a traditional method known to almost all the traditions of the world, and as paper burns so easily, it is mentally a great act of release when you watch the fire consume everything you have written down. If you like, you can also use black sesame seeds to represent your problems and then throw them into the fire.

If it is a particular someone who is causing you grief, then just write that person’s name on a piece of paper and wish that person out of your life. Never write down bad intentions, as this can be quite dangerous. Just wish for your problems to disappear from your life. Offer them to the fire and watch as they transform from words on a piece of paper into pure ash! Then scatter the ash onto the road outside your home and send whatever residual energy that may have been left over on its way. This little ritual can be a truly liberating experience.

3TIE YOUR PROBLEMS ONTO A TREE and let the rain and sun wash the ink off the piece of paper! This will cause whatever is disturbing you to get washed away by the powerful elements of the cosmic Universe.

4RELEASE YOUR PROBLEMS FROM A HIGH PLACE Another way to deal with mental afflictions brought your way by negative people is to go to the top of a high building and release your problems written onto helium balloons. For this ritual, it is better to phrase your problems as wishes. Rewrite them, restate your situation and use this to put a new slant to whatever is causing you to stress out. Here you are not burning them or throwing them into the drain or river, so write the reality you want, rather than write them as problems. Once you have rewritten your situation, you can make a fervent wish in your heart before releasing your helium-filled balloon to the skies; then watch as your balloon flies up into the skies and into the cosmos. 5TRANSFORM YOUR PROBLEMS INTO FLOWERS You can also use the element of Earth to dissolve your problems. Write down the situation that is disturbing you… then dig a hole in the ground in your garden about a foot deep. Next, tear up the piece of paper into small pieces before burying the pieces in the ground with about two inches of soil. Then plant a small flowering plant on top of your problems. When the plant grows strong and yields flowers for you, you know that your problems have transformed into a beautiful opportunity. Transforming your problems into flowers also allows you to let go of them… In any case, just making the effort to write out your anger, frustration or distress will help get these negative feelings out of your system. Always write down how you would like the situation resolved.

6REDUCE A TROUBLESOME PERSON in size and visualize this person about three inches high on your open palms, then blow the person away to Timbuktu or Siberia or to the Gobi desert, right out of your life completely. This can be someone competing for your husband’s affections (a troublesome predatory female or mistress); someone who plays dirty politics with you at work; someone who is actively bad-mouthing you or someone who may be bullying you at school. This method is symbolic; so this ritual does not harm the person, it only gets him/her out of your life.
