You may ask yourself how many ways are there to design a bedroom? It may feel like a simple task, but there are a lot more things to think about when planning the perfect bedspread. The bedroom is one of the more unique spaces of the home… it is a place where you find peace and solitude. No other room holds the same kind of importance of how our lives are determined and therefore special focus should be given to how we set up the bedroom. The question is how to begin?
Step 1 – Setting Out
The first step is to identify how the bed needs to be orientated. In most typical bedrooms, there are four walls to work with. First you need to identify the facing direction of the bed headboard, which is the direction one’s head is pointed to when lying down on the bed. Based on one’s four auspicious directions, there will be at least one direction of the four that is beneficial.
For couples, especially those from different Kua groups, the bed direction can either be determined based on the matriarch’s direction, or the patriarch’s direction if the main door of the house is suited for the mother. In this manner, both would have an equal share in tapping their auspicious directions. However, this rule would be superseded if the bed direction taps onto either person’s total loss direction.
Once you have established which direction to use, the next step is to identify the wall to be used. Ideally, the bed should be positioned such that it is in direct line to the door into the bedroom, but rather, have the door to the corner’s edge of the bed and the window to the side. If the window is directly behind the bed, have the window remodelled to the side to create a solid wall backing flanked by window panels.
Step 2 – Things to Look Out For
Once you have figured out which general space within the room the bed should be located in, you need to see if the location is suitable. Avoid elements that create stress on the bed placement such as overhead beams, overhead ceiling extrusions, roof trusses or sharp ceiling pelmets.
Not being the obvious item to look out for, but lighting and colours are also mighty important for creating the mood in the bedroom. Take note that the bedroom is a place for rest and peace, so the last thing you want are excessively bright lights that create glare. Avoid overhead chandeliers as there is a place for pendant lights in the living and dining rooms, but never in the bedroom.
And finally, the selection of flooring should be of a monotonous nature, such as a neutral patterned timber, but avoid sharp, distracting lines, as these cause more disharmony to the atmosphere of the room. Wall-to-wall carpets are a good option, as any mistake can be changed without too much cost impact, while offering a selection of soft and soothing textures for the room.
Step 3 – The Concept
Having understood what to look out for in the bedroom, the final stage is to set up the bed. Arrange your bed to maximize the views available, but always making sure the headboard is positioned to one of your auspicious directions.
Identify what type of bed you are using, whether a standalone bed or one with a built-in headboard. When you design a headboard, try to match a light colour fabric with a darker timber texture for the body. Doing this helps to centralize the bed position, while creating a neutral and calming feel for the room.
Selecting your bed linens is also important. Pick a colour that complements the colour of your headboard. Avoid overly contrasting colours, as this creates visual disarray. For the foot table, there are a multitude of options. You can introduce a settee set for lounging, or a low cabinet to store sheets, or you may opt for Hope Chest to store your wishes, notes and items close to you.
Once you have established the bed position, the next item on the list is to design the rest of the room. Always have the window or view positioned to the side of the bed, as this allows a source of natural sunlight but also gives you a direction to focus on when you wake up each day. Match the room curtains with a darker tone to create a contrast to the bed headboard. Doing so will establish the fabrics of the room. Avoid matching the bed headboard fabric with the curtains, as this would seem as if you had surplus fabric and ran out of ideas!
Position a lounge chair or sofa set by the window area to offer an alternative place to sit and read. Again, the colour selection of the sofa should be in line with the fabric of the bed to give the sofa area a distinct look when set with the contrasting curtain fabric.
While designing your bedroom can encompass a list of options to sift through, with these easy feng shui design tips, you will find it not too difficult to choose between your options to help you create an ideal sleeping sanctuary. And yes, it is important to get this sanctuary right, as your bedroom probably has the most bearing on your personal luck than any other room in the house.
